Tedious and Unrewarding
by rgbibeau,Mar 26 '04
Their shipping sucks! Free or not, passing off a shipment to a misnamed organization called Drop Ship 'Express' so they can hold it for a full day, then take another day passing it off to the USPS (the worst, most unreliable and least customer oriented shipper available in America) and then finally getting the package to actually start it's 3 to 8 day trip to my local P.O. for pickup is unacceptable in this day and age of quick reliable shipping methods.
This is my first and last order with Barnes and Noble because of this stone age shipping arrangement.

Will never order from online store again
by thesbia,Jun 08 '06
I ordered a hardcover book and received it damaged. The sleeve was ripped and the edges were flattened from being banged around. I returned the book not online but at a B&N store. Re-ordered the same book plus a DVD (I had a gift certificate) thinking it was a fluke and the next package would be fine. Received the package with even more damage, the hardcover book had a rip on the sleeve that progressed onto the cardboard cover. It's a pretty thick cover, it must take a lot to rip it! The book also was stained in one corner that looked like mold. The DVD was fine, was dusty but the DVD worked and I was able to dust it off. Will never order from this online store again!

Shipping is extremely slow!
by jacintx,Feb 28 '04
It took 18 days for my order to arrive, although it was promised in 3 - 8 days! Customer service was useless and could not even track the package since they use USPS. Get with the program and start using UPS B&N!

Registration is a hassle. Payment info difficult.
by field76,Aug 12 '04
Excellent selection, but registration is quite a hassle. My grandfather attempted to purchase something from BN.com. I did my very best to assist him in the registration. Here is what happened to us:
My grandpa's email address and password had been valid for years, and the company registration page kept rejecting the VALID information. There must have been a glitch in the page, as we finally get through to the payment step of our purchase. The experience wasn't over yet. The company initially did not accept our credit card number or address code. Both have been correct for years! After we finally got through that, they asked for our security code, which we thought for sure was valid on the back of the credit card. It turned out that the company AGAIN rejected the information, stating, "Security code invalid or expired." Ridiculous! Other companies, such as Ebay, have accepted the code! This was the last straw and we both gave up. Unless you are 100% positive that your info is 200% correct, do not buy here.
The good side to Barnes & Noble is that their selection is good and you can review items quite easily.

Customer Service Nightmare
by epinions5959,Jan 10 '08
Went to bookstore, and bought instore books in November. Out of stock items were ordered at the store. Told I had to pay for them in advance because they were considered special order. Did that. They sent email stating that items were shipped out, about a week later. Rec'd two of the items within a few weeks from that, third item told was backordered, and would not be shipped until after Christmas. This was not relayed to me until a week before Christmas. Called customer service and they told me to call the store that I purchased them at for refund and cancellation. Called store and was told that it was a Barnes&Noble.com issue. Had to go to a rude manager who told me it would take up to three weeks to process refund. Canceled order and went to amazon site. Rec'd book in three days without paying extra shipping. Price was even cheaper than Barnes & Noble. Learned valuable lesson, and they have lost a customer.

TERRIBLE!!!
by beebop4933,Apr 03 '07
The Barnes & Noble.com website is TERRIBLE!

I was unable to log in while trying to purchase an item today. (Why require shoppers to log in to make a purchase anyway? I don't have to log in when I walk into their store!)

These jabronies wanted me to give them $25 bucks a year to get the good price! Plus, while my book qualified for "Fast and Free" delivery, I had to spend MORE MONEY to get it!?!?

I placed the order for the product on ANOTHER companies website for LESS MONEY and the transaction was completed in seconds!!!

No LOGIN...NO BS...NO CONDITIONAL PRICING!!!

I'll NEVER do business with Overstock.com again!

Save yourself the grief and shop somewhere else
by masterplan0070,Nov 13 '03
I ordered one book one October 22, and choose the standard shipping. BIG MISTAKE! I was told from barnes and noble that the item had shipped on October 23 and that it would arrive in 3 to 8 days. LIARS! I just got the book yesterday, November 12. I called the post office to ask what took so long and they told me that barnes and nobles didnt ship the book until November 5. I couldnt believe a name as high as barnes and noble would have such horrible service. If you want your book sometime this month, do not shop here.

How B&N Treats You In Case UPS Loses Your Package
by bndontcare,Mar 16 '07
Attention, STUDENTS! I've always used Amazon.com to get my textbooks and never had a slightest problem. This time, as I was given a gift card, I decided to go with B&N. Big mistake. I placed my original order on February 28. It promised within 24 hours to ship out- it turned out to be 3 days. Then UPS misplaced the package and now it's lost. B&N is taking 8 business days (in my case 12 days with two weekends) to track it down, and in the meanwhile, B&N will not ship out a replacement order. I was told if the package doesn't turn out after that period of time, I MAY receive a credit back, but if the package is found, B&N will not give me a refund. A new session is starting at my school next week, and I don't even have the books. Other retail services would immediately replace your order upon notification, and then worry about the lost items (happened to me a couple of times in the past)- not so with Barnes & Noble, folks. Today is March 16. I placed an order of the same books with my trusted Amazon.com last night.

B&M membership
by donbcivil,Aug 27 '07
We started a B & N membership a few months ago; about a month ago, the phone lookup on the membership just stopped working.

Called tonight and the phone number in their database was incorrect...suddenly, after several months of being right. They refuse to prorate my membership, after the rep I spoke with had me on hold for 15-20 minutes talking to her supervisor.

I am forced to discourage B&N membership.

Jumping Ship to Amazon
by ottino,Jan 15 '07
I ordered 2 books before Christmas and still have not received them. I have tried tracking them via the link they gave me to Drop Ship Express. I can not access Drop Ship Express's web page and keep getting an error message. I sent a not to Barnes and Noble 3 days and ago and still have not had a reply. I have been a long time customer of B & N but think I will switch all my business to Amazon from now on after this terrible experience.

Terrible - never received books (2) or refund
by justbill1,Dec 02 '06
The worst customer service I have ever received. Ordered and paid for 4 books. Received 2 after a reasonable amount of time. Send email to provider of remaining 2 books as instructed by Barnes & Noble. Never received a reply. Send Barnes & Noble service an email and then received 4 different emails with 4 different dates when I would receive the books. Each date delayed receipt until I finally asked for a refund. Was told I would get a refund but instead got another email stating that "well we may say 4-14 business days for receipt but we really mean at least 20 business days. If you don't receive by then, let us know." To date, have not received books or refund. Will never, ever use this service again when they rely on other book stores to provide their books and they have no control.

horrid
by bjpartr,Sep 24 '07
My experience has been absolutely awful. After using Amazon for years, I ordered 2 copies of a 2 volume textbook from BN.com because my wife had a membership to the brick and mortar store and, with the membership, it was cheaper.

So, everyone do the math with me...2 volumes times 2 sets = 4 books. You can do it but BN.com absolutely cannot. First we received one set, then after 4 hrs on the phone including hold time, we received a second copy of volume two. So, currently I have 3 of the 4 books and there is no end in sight. They "can't find" the tracking info on their latest shipment and now they have 10 new excuses but I'm still waiting for the book.

They are currently unable to provide me with an estimate as to when this will be resolved.

Update: after a total of >6 hrs on the phone and multiple attempts, I now have 2 complete sets. In the interim, I received a 4th copy of volume 2. So, in addition, I have 2 extra copies of volume 2 that they don't want back.

The worst experience in my life while attempting to purchase a book.
by cobaka5372,Mar 23 '06
The first impression is often a lasting one; I went to B&N.com to purchase a reference book and was given three prices... the first was the b&N store price, second was the on-line price and last was the MEMBER price. I decided to become a CLUB-MEMBER and enjoy the " discounted member rate" after joining I was notified I could not order the book I needed until I received the MEMBER #. Three days later I go to purchase the book and there is only two prices.. regular price and " discounted MEMBER price" what BS. Call customer service and was informed they held the right to change prices as they see fit..and MS. MAVIS (the customer service manager) also stated that they have changed the prices during check-out process. I will not shop and do not recommend anyone shop B&N or their affiliates.

never shopping from Barnes Noble again.
by sejal143,Oct 25 '07
Barnes and Noble is by far the worst company ever. I had ordered a texbook online for it to be internationally shipped and i paid a load of money for it to be priority since i needed it in 4 days, they didn't ship it out until the next week. they are horrible in service, their 24 hours shipping is not guaranteed and never cheap. I would much rather buy my books from another store and still have it shipped to me in time. If your a student, don't shop at Barnes Noble, horrible!! and Shipping is always delayed, even if there's no holiday's or you had ordered it on a weekday.

ONE WORD: AWFUL!!
by shroodone,Feb 08 '06
I used to buy everything but the kitchen sink at Amazon. Then, I discovered that I could use my 10% off card from Barnes & Noble stores at B&N.com. SO, I began to use them. Things went fairly well for awhile, then weird stuff happened. On one order, I received 2 books instead of the DVD's I ordered. On another order, I received 2 of the correct books and one incorrect book. Then, on yet another order, I ordered 6 books and returned 3 and they said they had no record of the return. I had a PO receipt and because I put a book from a different order in with the 3 books from this order to save on postage, they BLAMED ME for putting them all in one box. Nowhere on their site that I've seen tells you not to do this. They treated me like a common criminal. Their warehouse operation is very poor. I put 4 books in one box and they claim it only had one book in it??? CAN YOU SAY NIGHTMARE??? Stick with Barnes and Noble stores, Amazon.com or go to Borders. B&N.com is one terrible experience!!!
