Since 1999, my first stop for books, CDs and DVDs

Amazon is like a candy store to me. I've never had a problem, except I've noticed that if I start ordering online at work, and finish at home, sometimes I get duplicates. So I just order from home now.
In selling books, CDs and DVDs, Amazon.com performs beautifully. I've been shopping there since 1999 (at least). They started out great and they've just gotten better (I do miss the free Post-It notes, though!). Together with Apple, it's on my very short list of implicitly-trusted sites.
I don't currently use the MP3 downloading service; my DLs didn't download, but that is probably my fault. It wasn't a big deal in terms of money, so I haven't addressed it yet. But when I do I'm sure they'll get it working for me.
To sum: I have bought hundreds of items from Amazon.com between 1999 and 2008, and never had anything less than a good, hassle-free experience. I returned something only once, and it was a breeze. They know what they're doing, and they do it excellently.

Deceitful and misleading advertising

Completely deceitful! Advertised Free shipping on the order page for this very product. I was in the process of ordering quantity two of this item totalling over $100. At the end when the final order came up on the screen, they had ADDED SHIPPING and sales tax!
I wrote to them and two weeks later they NEVER BOTHERED TO REPLY.

I bought a book through Amazon. They took the money, passed the order on to a company that went out of business, and after three weeks of e-mails, never returned the money, and never heard from them again. They lost this customer for good.

Nix on gift certificates

I've bought books from Amazon.com literally hundreds of times and always been satisfied. I've also bought one or two gift certificates before and it went well. But recently I had an experience that will prevent me from ever buying a gift certificate there again. I wanted to get gift certificates for one niece and one nephew. Naturally, they have computers. But with all the firewalls and spam blockers, etc., unless someone is unblocked, they don't always get through. One nephew and niece share a birth date, so I sent them each a gift certificate from Amazon.com; $100.00 each. My nephew (21) got his, but my niece (14) (and apparently not in need of money) made no effort to unblock Amazon.com to get the gift certificate. After three months I got disgusted and e-mailed Amazon to cancel the gift certificate. Well imagine my surprise when they said they couldn't because it was already sent. Don't they keep track of whether it was cashed? Can't they block it - like one would stop payment on a check? Apparently not. So I'm out $100 and the gift certificate is floating around cyberspace.

They have no control over their suppliers- cost me needless money to find this out.

I like Amazon but I don't like their policies for their suppliers. I bought several pieces of software from them on their website. Some was theirs and some actually came from office depot. Who knew? This was not stated that office depot would actually be sending the software. Anyway, within minutes of ordering I remembered I already purchased the software on line so I contacted Amazon. Amazon was quickly able to cancel their part of the bill BUT they could do nothing about the office depot part. They delivered it to me and long story short I was finally issued an RMA # 4 weeks afterward. I still had to pay for return shipping even though I canceled the order after only 4 minutes. They had no mechanism to stop orders canceled right after they were placed and who got stuck with the bill for their inadaquecies, why ME of course.

My 9 year old was brokenhearted that her gift never arrived!!

I was very disappointed with Amazon. I was trying to purchase a Bratz doll salon as an Easter present for my 9 year old niece. I bought on-line 10 days ago and got the purchase confirmation the next day of shipping. I have waited and waited and the package never arrived. I leave for London tomorrow where my niece is, and I have no present to give to her. Amazon say their is nothing they can do and I wont receive it till April 13th after easter and after I depart for London. Now I have left it so late to purchase this item anywhere else that they are all sold out and I have to arrive empty handed. Telling my niece that the Amazon lady said she was sorry is no consolation for a 9yo. I even called them first thing this morning Friday the 9th to see if they could over night it to me and they said no.
I will never never never waste my time and money at Amazon again and I will tell my friends the same.

Amazon has a great selection of Sweet Valley books, which I have read since I was very young. I enjoy how they not only put down what the on the market price is, but put a used price. I have used the "used" option several times, and it works fairly quickly. I enjoy all their help.

Placed an order using free shipping option. Item arrived 6 days ahead of the projected delivery time. Still impressed and a repeat customer.
Update: 8/9/05
Placed an order for an ibook using next business day shipping. The item was in stock and shipped as promised. This is my first "big ticket" ($800) purchase from amazon. Still a repeat customer, and stand by my original comments.

Like most large stores, amazon.com isn't without problems. But the problems are minor, and the prices and customer support make amazon a good choice for any purchase youre planning to make.
My first order with amazon was placed in 1997, and Ive been a consistent customer since. The prices tend to be among the best online--especially with their free shipping option--and they always ship quickly. On average it takes about 3-7 days to get the order from the time of initially placing the order.
The only problem I've had was the fault of the carrier, not amazon. Customer service quickly resolved the issue with a new item shipped two-day express.
Overall amazon.com is a top-notch reseller with low prices, fast shipping and great customer service. I'm definitely a long term customer.

So far, I've only had pleasant experiences with Amazon.com. I especially enjoyed buying used books and other things from Amazon.com members.
You can pretty much find anything at Amazon.com. The only problem is that if you want to sell, you can only sell things Amazon.com is selling. That means, if you have this really neat book at home, and would like to sell it; but Amazon.com is not currently selling the exact same itme, you can't either. But other than that, I would say Amazon.com is one of the best online stores around!

The barbie house looks great my daughter fell in love with it, the only problem is although amazon have a uk site, amazon.com dont ship to the uk. so we can only look at it, not buy it!! :( I emailed and received no response.

this was a terrible experience. Beach Audio advertises on amazon that the razor i ordered for Christmas was in stock. they didn't ship, or notify me that it wasn't due in until after christmas until i called. Great policy. i will never buy from them again.

I bought an eliptical around May and have yet to receive the actual product by the end of June because Amazon claims to be out of stock. Funny thing is, they're still selling the EXACT product online. Amazon's explanation is that because the product was on sale by Amazon, Amazon has to get the product in stock to give me the sale price. The issue here is that they're no longer keeping the product in stock and instead lets a third party merchant fulfill the order. So why can't they fulfill my order through a third party seller? Well, since the sale price listed by Amazon is $100 lower than the third party merchant's, Amazon says that the product must come from Amazon and not a third party seller. Huh. Couldn't they have told me that a month ago?
