In a little known State Park off Highway 22,between the small communities of Killdeer and the Native Reservation town of Mandaree, I happened on what was a rare sight to me. Located on the South side of the badlands there is a tree I had never seen before. There is a tree in North Dakota called the Bullberry which produces tart berries. The time they're a little sweeter is the winter after the berries have been frozen. In the early days of home-style canning by the homesteaders and while I was a teenager Bullberry homemade jelly was a treat on homemade bread. However, on with the story. The normal color of bullberries that I had experienced being around was a deep red. While visiting the State Park located at the top of the badlands, however, I found a Bullberry tree with orange berries. It's the only one I've ever seen in my fifty-one years of living in North Dakota. There are hiking trails at the park also.
