Lead mining began in Missouri nearly 280 years ago, and for the last 90 years, southeast Missouri has been the premier lead mining region of the United States. The Old Lead Belt district was preeminent for 65 years, regularly producing as much as 80 percent of the nation's mined lead. When St. Joe Minerals Corp. ceased operation in the Old Lead Belt, the milling complex was donated to the state. The 25-acre site features a museum with restored underground mining equipment and exhibits on geology and a large display of mineral specimens. The museum may be toured for a nominal fee.
