Pros: Startling cinematography, deep philosophical implications. Cons: Somewhat wooden acting, a bit overley dramatised.
I have a feeling that reputation of the director haunts them unduly throughout their career. So a mediocre director like Emmerich wouldn't be given credit for a great movie, while great directors would be given too much credit for their mediocre films. ...
Pros: Jaw-dropping special effects. Cons: fantastic circumstancs
I may be being nieave, but I look at this movie as a disaster movie. Nothing more nothing less. And if thats what you're looking at it as, then its a sucess. The movie starts out fairly vaugely, and deals with lots of people. But as the movie ...
Pros: Reminded me of Independence Day; cool weather effects Cons: Lots of holes in the story; Dennis Quaid
Even if I hadn't already known, I would have guessed by watching this movie that either the director or screenwriter, or both, had been heavily involved with Independence Day (the movie where Will Smith smacks some alien butt --- wait, there are two of ...

Pros: compelling, thought provoking, interesting light (moody, gloomy and dark)Stunning special effects. Cons: Thin plot- kind of far fetched, so so acting,
A dark film, about the realities of climate change. Filmed in a dark and moody light- with special effects that are at times stunning, and other times gritty and gloomy. The film has a haunting melancholy power that grows in time- after several viewings. The plot is rather thin, and the actors are not used to their full potential. The political message starts out decently- but ends silly.
Overall Emmerichs most 'serious' and provoking film- as global warming is here and it could have drastic effects on the future for all of us- and that alone makes it compelling- despite the so so acting and rather thin plot and and silly 'digital wolves'........
I have to admit, I had a feeling about this one before I went. And Roland Emmerich delivered on my gut reaction - absolutely no plot. This movie was delivered to us from the world of fantasy land where all sorts of impossibilities began happening.
Sitting in the theater, people began laughing at the screen at the cheeziness and just ridiculous adversities that started popping up.
But do you want to know what makes a bad movie even worse? A bad movie with a message. Not only did they throw an impossible scenario based on no scientific facts at us, but then began to preach to us how about current practices are going to get us there anyway. I didnt pay 9 bucks to have something sold to me. Anyway.. Big turn off. Dont see it. Catch it on TBS next month.
This is a Special Effects Movie by jasonfletcher,Jun 05 '04
Pros: special effects, grand scale, nationally recognized landmarks Cons: storyline, plot, resolution
This movie is strong on special effects and rife with ultra-left wing environmental ideology. The scenes depicting the horrendous natural disasters were quite realistic and appropriately shown on the big screen. The story-line was a little sappy, and not near as deep as the over-riding plot of the world coming to an end. The solution to the world's crisis also was quite weak. In the end, if you're looking for an impressive display of freak natural disasters hitting L.A. and New York, this is a great film. Don't expect much more out of it and you'll go home happy.
The story follows the climatologist Jack Hall (played Dennis Quaid) as he works to forecast the eventual outcome of disasterous events and attempts to rescue his son who has become trapped in Manhattan library.
The first half of the film is packed with some awesome digital effects: major cities being flooded, tornadoes, errant container ships floating down Fifth Avenue, freezing degrees icing helicopters, people and buildings. The story then follows Jack and his quest to save his son, Sam (played by Jake Gyllenhaal). This change in focus meshes well with the first half of the movie and the characters are built believably enough for us to care about them. The performances are decent. In addition to Jack and Sam, the two leading ladies (Laura Chapman, Sams love interest, is played by Emmy Rossum and Sela Ward plays his mother, Dr. Lucy Hall) both seem believable and interesting in their roles.
In short, The Day After Tomorrow is worth seeing on the big screen for the jumbo-sized special effects and the storyline is crafted well enough to keep you interested.
Pros: Great special effects, scientific believability. Cons: Predictable outcome, dialog not well thought out.
A well-done movie with good special effects. The thing that makes this movie as good as it is is its scientific plausibility. Global warming triggers a seemingly insignificant series of events that together cross a cataclysmic threshhold and trigger huge storms and bring about a new ice age across the northern hemisphere.
The human stories within this meteorological armageddon were a bit too predictable, and the dialog could have been better written.
Special Effects never fail to entertain by tdirewolf,May 26 '04
Pros: Great scenes, good overall plot, very fun movie. Cons: Global warming - I'm sick of hearing about it, character development
In a typical, yet above average, disaster film, The Day After Tomorrow delivers all that is expected. In disaster films there is no real room for good character development as the center of the play is some catastrophic event, and this is no different. However, when will people ever get sick of special effects like this. It is always fun to appease the nightmare of an armaggedon, and this flick is perfect. Grab popcorn, sit back, and imagine what it would be like while you watch this rollercoaster of a movie.
Best Disaster Flick since Armageddon by rajkalex,May 29 '04
Pros: Great disaster scenes and keeps a good sense of humor. Cons: The disaster scenes leave you wanting a little more of them.
This movie starts off as a disaster flick but then goes into a human interest story about a father searching for his son. The plot is silly but I'm referring to the part where the father goes to the middle of a natural disaster to find his son, like he can save him. But like said before, people go to this for the disaster effects and they are astounding and ultra realistic. This was an intense film and the most fun you can have at a movie theater without getting arrested. I would have given it a 4.5 since a few of the major disaster scenes had to be cut out due to lack of time, but the ones that made it are fantastic.
Pros: really cool special effects, sound Cons: too much politics, very predictable
I like this film, but I don't love it. The special effects are amazing, but the plot is pretty lame. It is a very poltical film and speaks out about how the director feels global warming. Which is one of the things that is annoying about this thing. The other thing was that the wolves attacking. That has nothing to go with the plot of the movie!!! Anyway, I like the special effects and the sound. The Day After Tomorrow is a very unrealistic movie but it is very cool. That's all of my review.
Pros: Great visual effects, great story Cons: NONE!
ROLAND EMMERICH PROVES HIMSELF TO BE THE MASTER OF DISASTER!
Apocalyptic thriller: Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), a paleoclimatologist, has made a disturbing discovery during his research: the world is about to suffer a dramatic clima-change due to global warming with catastrophical consequences. The Vice President ignores his warnings and dismisses them as ridiculous. But then, weather conditions take a sudden turn for the worse. Tornadoes and hail are causing havroc and disaster and are claiming many victims.
But the worst is about to happen: a gigantic storm threatens to turn half of the planet into an icy desert.
My epinion: Emmerich takes care of business in this movie. He created a heart-stopping, nail-chewing, sit-on-the-edge-of-your-chair kind of movie! This apolcalyptical thriller will have non-smokers ask for a cigarette! After all, he is the director and cowriter of Independence day as well as cowriter of Godzilla and Stargate. The visual effects are shockingly real and next to them, the movie has a great storyline as well. Emmerich said in an interview that he wants his movie to make people think. It worked on me!
Pros: Visual effects, family storyline, bittersweet ending. Cons: Can't think of any.
I've always been interested in the weather and this movie has it all! Twisters, hurricanes, flooding, you name it. The visual effects are amazing! If you're going to see this movie, you have to see it in the theaters.
