One of the things about your children growing up is that you no longer have the excuse to play with toys or to see movies that are geared toward children. Well I had decided that even if I couldnt round up a grandchild to take to the movies, I would still grab my hubby and wed go see Shrek 2 ourselves.
It didnt end up that we had to go alone. Our 3rd daughter called and asked if we wanted to go with her family ..YAY a good excuse to see this second film starring that adorable ogre.
The Story
Who wouldnt fall in love with a big green ogre and his new bride as they go on their honeymoon and remind us of what love is about?
When Shrek and Fiona get married they go off on their honeymoon and return to find their friend Donkey in their home. Getting rid of him so that they can have some private time turns out to be a bit difficult and funny too.
After receiving an invitation to return to Fionas home, Far Far Away, to celebrate their nuptials the happy couple, along with Donkey, set out on the adventure.
Things arent as happy as the couple was hoping. Fionas parents arent happy with Fionas choice and neither is her Fairy Godmother.
It seems that many years ago the Fairy Godmother and the King, Fionas father, made a deal. Fiona was promised to her son Charming and the Fairy Godmother was going to be sure that Happily Every After was with her son.
The movie goes on to show us how hard Shrek fights to keep his love and how in the end good triumphs over evil.
The Cast & Characters
Shrek 2 is filled with characters that we may recognize from the original Shrek movie. Of course there is Shrek, whose voice is once again done by Mike Myers. Fiona is voiced by Cameron Diaz and Donkey by none other than Eddie Murphy.
A wonderful addition is Antonio Banderas as the lovable Puss-N-Boots. His big dark eyes can make everyone go awwww, then he attacks and protects those he loves.
John Cleese provides the voice for Fionas father, the king and the remarkable Julie Andrews is Fionas mothers voice.
The fun and fanciful and warmly wicked Fairy Godmother was played by Jennifer Saunders, and her son, Charming was voiced by Rupert Everett.
Also included in this film were the voices of Larry King, Joan Rivers and John Lithgow.
My Feelings
I had such a great time viewing this movie. It was wonderful to be with family and to watch my grandchildrens reactions as they watched. Even DaeDae my youngest grandson (2 ½ years) enjoyed every moment of this one.
While many of the jokes would go way over any childs head, they did make seeing this movie much more fun for the adults who are watching. Perhaps adding this humor truly makes films like Shrek 2 a family movie.
I liked all of the characters in this movie, except for Mongo, the very large gingerbread man. His role in the movie was to help Shrek and friends get back into the castle, but I found something about him frightening. I wonder if some children wont have this same feeling. There were some funny moments with him, but I personally just didnt care for this part of the film.
I would highly recommend this movie for families. It is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon together. Youll laugh, a lot, and maybe shed a small tear or two and definitely be entertained.
Fortunately for me, I read flamepillars wonderful review and knew to stay past the credits. As we left the theater we told everyone in line to stick around. There is such a cute additional part with Donkey .dont miss it!
Nuts & Bolts
Shrek 2 was released on Wednesday May 19 and has been a blockbuster hit on its first weekend. It was distributed by Dreamworks.
The running time is about an hour and half, boy did that time fly by. This film is rated PG because of some the humor that is used, funny rolling in the aisle stuff. Hey, even us big kids love fart jokes. As I said, most of it will go over a young childs head so not to worry. I didn't feel that there was anything in it that children should be sheltered from.
