For those who've not seen the original Shrek, this will contain some spoilers so like, go buy that one first. heh.
So in the first Shrek we had Ogre and Donkey rescuing the fair Princess Fiona from the tower guarded by Dragon. Fiona had been cursed to live as a beautiful princess by day, and an ogre by night. Who she fell in love with would set her form forever. She, of course, fell for Ogre... and I rejoiced.
Now then in Shrek 2 we have the happy couple returning from their honeymoon to find an invite from Fiona's parents, the King and Queen of Far Far Away, requesting she bring her new hubby home for a grand gala. Of course, they think she was rescued by the shallow and conceited Prince Charming. Hilarity ensues.
All through the madness are constant laugh out loud moments. Yes, it relies on fart jokes here and there, but man we were just rollin', as were the other theater patrons. There are quite a few adult jokes that will easily fly past the kiddie's noggins, but will make this enjoyable on just about every age level.
There are also several pop culture references that you really have to watch for.. do look for Pinnochio as Michael Jackson. Too damn funny.
For those who don't know, this is an animated series and it is done just outstanding. You never feel like you are watching a cartoon at all. It's computer animated and they paid a great deal of attention to detail here. For instance, Puss in Boots is voiced by Antonio Banderas and they watched several of his older movies to get the facial expressions right on that cat. They even made him hack for 45 minutes to get just the right sound for his scene of hacking up a hairball.
Shrek and Fiona are once again voiced by Mike Meyers and Cameron Diaz, much to my delight. Donkey is of course Eddie Murphy and an integral part of the laughs. All do an outstanding job once again. Honestly, I went in expecting it to be good, but somehow a bit less than the first one. I was pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed this sequel every bit as much as the first and I hope they find a way to make a story for a third.
The music is all very upbeat, driving, and fun here. There are several numbers sung by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas that are just hysterical. I recall one song was written by Nilsson but can't recall the rest and the soundtrack isn't listed on IMDB.com yet. Dang it. It is fun though and keeps the tone of the movie moving right along.
Shrek 2 runs 93 minutes and is Rated PG for some crude humor, a brief substance reference and some suggestive content. As to that substance reference.. talk about nitpicking! It's Puss in Boots getting frisked by the knights and they find catnip, which he claims is not his at all. Very funny gag, that, and it goes by fast. The crude humor they reference is of course the fart jokes. What kid doesn't find that hilarious? Gimme a break. Bring the kids.
I absolutely recommend you see this one. I plan to buy it when they release the DVD, and it will absolutely be on my Best of 2004 list when that comes out.
