What if…there are so many things we could imagine about. Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger) goes off to track and find three criminals from the Oxbow Quadrant of the mountains of Montana. What he encounters is much different than he expected. He did not find the escapees, but bits of blood stained cloth which was left behind. He also found an Indian Arrow which captivated his interest. This eventually led him to Barbara Hershey who plays Lillian Sloan, an anthropologist with a special interest in Cheyenne Indians.
The story is narrated by Wilford Brumley and he adds quite a bit of charm to the movie, though never seen.
Eventually, Gates convinces Sloan that he did, in fact, see something out there and he wanted to find out more and then to go in search of whatever he saw. Lillian explains that the arrow is one of the Cheyenne Dogmen Warriors, but she believed it was a cheap reproduction. At least, that was what she told him initially. She finally decides he may have enough information to warrant researching and to his dismay, she is the one who goes off with him.
The story of this movie is lofty, in expectation, but does not quite live up to it’s intentions. The premise is interesting but pretty improbable(even for me, usually; I can watch with complete detachment to reality). Barbara Hershey presents a solid performance as always, while Tom Berenger’s performance as a macho, I-don’t-care-about anyone, just doesn’t come across very well. I like Tom Berenger, but this is not one of his better performances.
The real star in this movie is the beautiful scenery, the cinematography and the wonderful Cheyenne Tribe that is, in fact, living and well in the mountains. I enjoyed the movie and would heartily recommend it to people I like. Just don’t expect too much from the storyline, or the acting. Sit back and enjoy the aesthetics, the scenery, and the "fairy tale". You will enjoy it, if you don’t take it too seriously.
