This movie is an excellent retelling of the true tale of the Apollo 13 mission. It is as dramatic on screen as Apollo 13 was in real life.
Tom Hanks reminded me of Jim Lovell, whom I had the privilege of meeting in person while he was on an autograph tour in support of his book LOST MOON. (Technically, the studio which produced APOLLO 13 actually bought the rights to LOST MOON and retitled the movie to appeal to baby boomer space geeks like myself.) This is a tribute to his rare gift for convincing the audience that Hanks is whom he is playing. It also helps to have that wonderful gift of being an Everyman, a gift seemingly possessed in abundance by Hanks.
I was also amazed by one small subplot. Blanche, Lovell's mother, was quite up in years if the movie is to be believed. Marilyn, Lovell's wife, was given the challenge of caring for her, a sixteen-year-old daughter in the midst of adolescent angst, and worrying whether Jim would come home from space alive and well. The scenes in which these goals are accomplished stand out in my memory for their excellence. (Blanche Lovell is played by Ron Howard's mother, and Marilyn Lovell is played by Kathleen Quinlan.)
