Victor Victoria has the scene I most often recall when I think of a funny scene in a movie. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen it, I still laugh. When out-of-work singer Julie Andrews is thrown out of her apartment after fending off the managers' advances, she hides a giant cockroach she's found in her purse and goes to a fancy restaurant where she ravenously eats at least three main courses. She can't pay her bill, so the cockroach ends up on her salad, which she shows to the waiter. But the owner says that is an old trick and threatens to call the police. Meanwhile, the cockroach has escaped. The following scene is a masterpiece of casting and direction.
First we see an enormous leg belonging to an overweight lady and the bug beginning its crawl upward, followed by her horrified shriek "Cockroach" echoed by screams and pandemonium as chairs and tables are overturned and napkins fly through the air as customers stampede away.
It is at this point that another actor who has been observing her predicament comes to her rescue, takes her to his apartment, reassures her that she is not the gender he attracted to,listens to her plight and helps her develop a unique act where she, as a woman, pretends to be a man who is a female impersonator. Julie becomes a singing sensation in the cabaret world and eventually meets a handsome guy which, because of her impersonator role, leads to many laughs as the predicament works itself out.
