'Victor/Victoria' is, bottom line, one of the best comedies I've ever seen! The casting of Robert Preston as Toddy, the gay entertainer just cruising through life in search of a good time (and the almighty dollar, was genius. The man was both talented and versatile, as he proved in this role.
Now add Julie Andrews, but mind you, this is no 'Mary Poppins!' Her versatility shines in the film also. When she meets Toddy in a restaurant, the timing is perfect, as neither of them can afford to pay for their dinner. He just pounces on the opportunity to help her release their 'meal ticket,' in a most unforgettable and side-splitting scene.
Where they take us from here is just a roller coaster of laughter, joy, laughter, tears, and more laughter! This team just doesn't quit, and the addition of James Garner, Lesley Ann Warren, and Alex Karras to this entourage just makes the film more magical!
The best scene in the movie is at the end, after 'Victor' resigns, and Toddy has to take his/her place on stage. After all, the show must go on, and thanks to the great Robert Preston, it surely did! Too bad the dress didn't fit a little better!
