Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
This is a sweet, funny movie.
Julie Andrews is Victoria Grant, a down-and-out singer in 1930's Paris. She's so desperate, she's willing to swap her virtue for a meatball. That is, until she meets Carroll Todd (Robert Preston). Through a riotous series of events, involving a restaurant, a cockroach and a rainstorm, she winds up wearing his ex-lover's clothing.
Convinced Victoria is the ultimate female impersonator, Toddy gets Andre Cassell (John Rhys-Davies), the greatest talent scout in Paris, to back her. She is an overnight sensation.
King Marshan (James Garner) who is scouting talent for his own Chicago club, catches her act, and falls hard for her, believing that "Victor" is a woman.
Romance ensues, as does much orientation questioning on the part of both King and his bodyguard (Alex Karras). Girlfriend Norma (Lesie Anne Warren) is just grossed out by it all.
But, this is a musical, so there is a happy ending, which is worth the rental price alone.
My take:
Absolutely hilarious. The musical numbers are perfectly staged, and appropriate to the period. My favorite is "The Shady Dame from Seville" followed closely by "Jazz Hot Baby."
Julie has never been in better voice, and she is given the opportunity to use her full, impressive range, from almost tenor to glass-breaking soprano.
When Robert Preston died, the world was a great deal poorer. He has been a brilliant on-screen flim-flam man since the late 1950's. Toddy has to be the best he did since _Music Man_.
Besides, how often does one get to watch a PG rated sex farce?
