Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
Ever since I saw the movie, The Sound Of Music, Julie Andrews has become one of my favorite actresses. So naturally, I became amorous of her distinctive voice and her ability to shift into any character and play it very well. Plus her voice is so structured that I knew it was meant for me to see more movies from the woman who taught me what music was all about.
Victor Victoria is an excellent movie. It is much different from the movie The Sound of Music based on the role of her persona and the fact that I can watch The Sound of Music anytime because it is my favorite movie. Victor Victoria is more of a movie that I watch on days when I am feeling logy and I just want to laze around. But the laughter sure can bring a smile onto my face because this movie is so funny.
Julie Andrews plays the role of a woman named Victoria pretending to be a man named Victor to get stage work in which she has to pretend to be a woman. Julie would get on stage and do a musical number dressed as a woman and then get the crowd aroused when she pulled off a wig to show to them that she was actually a man, though she really wasn't. It was like a masquerade ball and Julie played to her strengths making her part funny and believable.
Julie Andrews has the most beautiful voice and she used it gracefully in this musical comedy. Victor Victoria was based on the 1933 UFA Film Viktor/Viktoria. The movie is set in Paris during the 1930s. It had a pretty good story line and had me laughing in many instances.
Victoria is a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman and through it all, she finds time to fall in love with a mobster (James Garner). He knows her secret but to keep the truth from surfacing for others to know, he has to pretend to be in a gay relationship. When Victoria wants to go out dancing, they go to a gay bar to dance. It was her mobster boyfriend's ex-girlfriend that had a jaundiced view of the whole thing who outed him to his superiors and had them come investigate him. But Victor let her know the truth the only way he/she knew how and it vexed her even more to find out that she wasn't being dissed for a man but actually a woman.
Her mobster boyfriend wanted Victoria to quit and stop pretending to be a woman but she doesn't want to give up stage work. Yet her feelings for him are open and honest while her ideas of acting, her first love, were somewhat tenacious. But as in true life, love always wins at the end.
Victoria was involved in some skilled work. She got on the stage and did a number that involved dancing and some really prominent singing. Her voice is so strong. She was doing riffs that amazed me. Listening to her is like part two of Starting at the very beginning with Do-Re-Mi. But it was seeing her in a different role practicing dodgery that made me respect her acting even more.
My thoughts on this movie are based on her impersonating a man. Just because she had short hair does not mean she looked like a man because she has a pretty face. But then to counter it was the big suits and ties that she was wearing. And I don't remember seeing her wear earrings. And it wasn't until the end when I saw her in her natural form and I preferred looking at her that way. Nonetheless, it was Julie Andrews at her best playing a role that surprised me to get as deep into it as I did. And I liked it.
I liked this movie though I only got the opportunity to see this movie that was released by MGM since 1982 twice. In it, I noticed more things the second time round and grew to love it more. It was the structure and form of the movie. It was the organized journey that had me interested in the destination in which it was taking me. It was seeing Julie Andrews at the helm of her artistry. And it was the funny storyline that had me wanting to continuously watch and not miss any parts. Victor Victoria is a really good movie.
