Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
I loved watching this movie! Julie Andrews and Robert Preston worked so well together! Of course the filmmaker Blake Edwards won an Academy Award for his music! It was nominated for seven Oscars, and three went to the Golden Globe Winner, Julie Andrews, the National Board of Review Award Winner, Robert Preston, and Lesley Ann Warren, as Norma.
This story takes place in Paris and is about a woman named Victoria, (Andrews) who has a beautiful voice, but is being turned down at many theaters. She doesn't have a lot of money and is starving. At an audition, she meets Toddy, (Preston) a gay cabaret performer, who is also having a little financial trouble. He has dinner with her, and helps her to get a free dinner by putting a bug in her salad.
Toddy thinks of a way to get them both more money and theaters to sing at. He wants to turn Victoria into a gay, Polish, woman-impersonator. He dresses her up and takes her to an audition.
In her first show, she awes the crowd and wins the heart of King Marshall; (James Garner) who thinks very much of himself. When she reveals that she is not a woman he gets very upset that he was tricked and denies it. Norma, an annoying, clingy, actress who becomes jealous does some crazy things and is soon sent home to get away from King Marshall.
King Marshall believes that Victoria is really a woman and sneaks into her hotel room where she is drawing a bath. When he has his proof, he makes a move on her saying that he doesn't care if she is a man or woman and he kisses her. She reveals that she is a woman and starts a relationship with the King. He is afraid that people will think he is gay and breaks up with her.
Norma goes home and meets a fiend of the King's and tells him that the King could be gay. The fiend makes a relationship with Norma and goes to Paris to blackmail the King and take some money. Norma soon finds out, in an awkward way, that Victor is actually Victoria. In the end, Victoria lets go of her stardom and gives it to Toddy, along with the dress, make-up, and heels.
I love this movie. It is very confusing, but it is very funny. I would recommend it to a mother and daughter to watch. I wouldnt recommend it to any child younger than 12. There is sexual content in this movie but Julie Andrews did an amazing job. I laughed so hard at some scenes, and loved the scenes where James Garner and Julie Andrews came together.
The DVDs features include feature-length audio commentary by Julie Andrews and Blake Edwards, Interactive Menus Cast/Director Career Highlights, Trailer, and Scene Access. I think that if you watch it on a VCR or DVD, youll love it. It is just a wonderful movie and has a great story line!
