Not very many people know that Sean Penn and Tom Cruise are in this movie, in supporting roles as senior cadets at this academy. Cruise's character is the only one left who supports the barricading, showing a willingness to lose his life - not because the principles espoused originally are so great, but because the character just enjoys the addictive nature of the fight.
Frankly, I have a hard time believing that a character as young as Cruise's has enough life experience to enjoy the addictive nature of a fight as intense as this. One would have to have been in at least one war or other type of conflict in order to know that that kind of adrenaline rush is in the offing and derive some sort of "high" from it. Having said that, however, it must also be said that Cruise does an excellent job with what the writers give him, as does Penn.
George C. Scott also deserves mention as the beleagured head of the academy.
