Kidnykid's Full Review: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
For me, part of the charm of this movie was the soundtrack. This movie has my favorite end-credit music of all the ST movies. It is the only ST movie to blend the Jerry Goldsmith Klingon and TV-show themes with any degree of success.
In addition, the philosophical issues raised in this movie sorely need to be discussed in sci-fi. At the very least, Roddenberry was very reluctant to deal with religion or God in any ST vehicle. Shatner was the only ST regular to defy this unspoken ban, and I'm glad of it. Specifically, although I disagree with the idea that everyone carries a bit of God within him or her (classic New Age philosophy if you ask me), I like the idea that Shatner and his writers were willing to tackle the issue of how God is defined, whether or not God is Someone you ought to believe in, and yes, just what God would need with a starship. In short, I'm glad the issues surrounding the existence (or lack thereof) of God were discussed honestly, no matter what Roddenberry might have thought. You have to start somewhere!
Special effects were the only bad part of this movie. This is where an ample budget would have really done Shatner a lot of good. From what I understand, he was unable to hire ILM to get the special effects done - they were supposed to have been booked up at the time this film was made - and the people who did this movie's effects did not do a very good job (to put it mildly).
