It's hard to go wrong when you have Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery on your side.
Ordinarily, Alec Baldwin's talent is misused. But this movie is a good use of his talent - he doesn't have the bad habit of sounding as if he is merely reciting lines (a problem he developed in THE SHADOW), but is actually playing a character, and a substantial one at that. He plays the Jack Ryan role, a CIA-type spy who finds out about a submarine named Red October, owned by the Russians during the Cold War. He also finds out through confidential channels that the captain of this sub, played by Sean Connery, wishes to defect and become an American citizen. The entire movie apparently revolves around trying to get Connery's character over to this side of the Pacific, although I find it hard to follow the plot.
I also wish Gates McFadden were allowed more screen time as Jack Ryan's wife. Due to a committment to the producers of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, she was unable to reprise this role opposite Harrison Ford (and was replaced by Anne Archer), and I wish she had.
