markmc's Full Review: 2010: The Year We Make Contact
It is very hard to make a sequel to a classic, the expectations are either way too high or there is little interest because some people think a sequel would only be a step down. This film and Return to Oz are the two main examples of good films that had the misfortune of trying to follow up great films. 2001 gave all the questions, an open-ended film ripe for all kinds of theories and discussions. 2010 gives us the answers or at least most of them and I think they handled this part very well because this was not an easy task. Some critics say the answers tied things up too neatly, that could be to some extent, but the film is interesting from beginning to end and the events are no less probable than that of the first film. The visuals in this film are well done, not as eye popping as the original was in 1968, but well above most films in 1984. The acting is well done, the people in the original were mainly cold to reflect the society, but the people in this film seem to gradually melt their cold shells as they realize what they are on the verge of finding. A very worthy sequel and one of the 1980's stronger sci-fi films.
