Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Snowman Cake Pan Face
The holiday baking season is right around the corner. Well, that's a little bit of an exaggeration but before you know it we'll be ripping down the Halloween decorations and getting ready for Christmas. If you are looking to invest in some great baking pans, the Step-By-Step Snowman is a great one to check out. The pan is a decent size; 12 inches long, 2 inches deep and 9 inches at the widest points of the cheeks. You can get about fifteen generous pieces from this cake, more if you cut them smaller. Can you use this to make an ice cream cake? You can but you would be wise to line it with plastic wrap first so that you can get it out of the pan easily. I like to make brownies in this but, as I caution with boxed cake mixes, you really do have to use a quality cake release product so it pops out of the pan without any stuck bits.

Simplicity is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of this pan. It is suitable for anyone to use regardless of how much or little baking experience they have. All it takes is one box of standard sized cake mix to fill this and decorating it is a breeze as well. This looks great if you use a white boxes cake mix and you can jazz it up a little by mixing in some red and green sprinkles so that they melt a little during the baking process. That will give you a very cute look to the cake when you cut it and will be a guarantee that every soccer mom in the room will cringe that you thought of that trick and they didn't.
The design of the pan is great; the snowman has just the right amount of detail to make it look great but not so much that it takes forever and a day to decorate. The eyes and nose are almost the same size so if you have some type of candy around the house that matches up to that size, you can use that to decorate it when you are frosting o icing it. The hat can be done up in any color you like and of course there is one small holly leaf on the band. Even with the crevices and cavities of the pan, it is easy to get the cake out of it but you do have to use a quality cake release product to ensure that you don't end up with ripped bits. The insert that comes with the pan gives you some great tips on getting a solid cake from the pan. If you are new to baking, these tips can really help.
One thing you are going to want to do before you bake this is to use a cookie sheet under the pan. This will ensure that it doesn't tilt a little in the oven. I had that happen one time and ended up with a huge glob of batter stuck to the bottom of the oven. To check the cake insert a clean toothpick into the middle. If I comes out clean then you know that your cake is done. Allow it to cool completely before you try to flip it out of the pan; this will help you get a good form from the pan and release it evenly. If you have sections that have stuck to the pan you can try to cover up those spots with frosting or icing but for bigger chunks you are better off trying to 'glue' the pieces back in to place. When you flip the snowman out, make sure you have something solid to flip it on to. A cake board or cookie sheet works great for it.
I got this pan for about $4.50 at Michaels. The normal selling price is in the eight dollar range but I took advantage of their 40% off coupon that appears in the Sunday newspaper. The Wilton Online Store sells this almost year round for $7.49 plus shipping. It's more than worth it for the design of the snowman and the various ways that you can decorate it. It is something that almost anyone can use so if you are sitting there saying that there is no way you can make the cake or decorate it, you will have to find another excuse because this pan is just that easy to use. Why is it called a step-by-step pan? Because Wilton walks you through the process of baking and decorating it but please remember, there is no right or wrong way to decorate it so don't feel that you have to stick with what you see on the pan insert.
