pippadaisy's Full Review: Eric Carle - The Grouchy Ladybug
One of the great things about having four kids is that you get to rediscover things with the last one and get more enjoyment out of them with the older kids. Such was the case with Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug, which my nearly-three-year-old chose at the library this week.
::: Eric Carle :::
My children are huge fans of Eric Carle and Eric-Carle-illustrated books. The brightly painted illustrations and the repetitive text make for an interesting read for the tiniest little ones, as well as older children just learning to read. Somewhere along the way, we must have lost The Grouchy Lady, but it was a welcome reunion when my daughter chose it.
::: The Story :::
The Grouchy Ladybug tells the story of (you guessed it) a grouchy ladybug. The ladybug not only doesn't want to share aphids with another ladybug, but it also wants to pick fights with everyone. When one ladybug stands up to the grumpy one over sharing, it decides it needs someone bigger to fight with. With each larger animal, the pages get bigger and bigger, with the same mantra each time: the ladybug picks a fight, the animal says fine, and then the ladybug flies off to find someone bigger.
As with all moral lessons, the ladybug eventually gets its comeuppance, with the lesson being that you can waste a lot of time being grumpy and making people angry, only to wind up right back where you started.
Some of the words were a bit too much for my kindergartner, who has just learned to read, but the repetitious language is a big help, and keeps the littler ones entertained. They also claim they got the message about being grumpy only to end up right back where we all started.
