Kidnykid's Full Review: Joseph Cardinal Bernardin - The Gift of Peace: Per...
I had the privilege of meeting Joseph Cardinal Bernardin briefly twice, and both times, he impressed me as being, for want of a better way of putting it, one of the most authentic spiritual leaders this side of the Almighty. No matter how one might feel about the way he was leading his archdiocese - and conservative Catholics did disagree with him on certain issues - nobody could doubt that he was the "real thing," a thoroughly honest spiritual leader who died too soon no matter how old he was.
This book contains personal reflections on such life events as his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, the fact that he became terminally ill with this disease about fifteen months later, and the unfounded allegations of sexual abuse he had to live through in an all-too-public forum. Particularly in the latter circumstance, he taught all of us the value of honesty (he never let the lawyers talk him into remaining silent, but went public with his insistence that he was chaste according to his station in life, and this benefitted him in the long run) and forgiveness (he and his accuser were able to forgive each other before they both died).
