Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I have no idea * what* I was thinking when I decided to watch this "documentary" live on the 'Watch Instantly' option on Netflix, only out of morbid curiosity and to see what the big deal was when it comes to friends that I do have that smoke things that they sometimes shouldn't. Curiosity killed the cat, right?
This documentary is a mockumentary, based loosely on the Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock who went on a comsumption fest for McDonalds for 30 days to see the medical and emotional effects that the diet would bring. Well, comedian Doug Benson decided that he would use the same premise, the same 30-day period, but with his beloved marijuana, but doing so in California and for medical reasons per his depression, in order to have it legalized.
While I personally feel that both Benson and Spurlock are crazy to put themselves through it, I say, "Why not?". It trails him for roughly 60 days, with the first 30 days with him going cold turkey, taking medical, SAT tests, under a dr and therapists care. They test his sixth sense among other things to see how coming off and going back on POT changes him.
Meanwhile, he is doing his stand up comedy routine, showing only bits and pieces of him discussing Super High Me. He also uses the camera crew to record ongoing battles between the feds and the stores that sell legalized marijuana for medical purposes. I did learn a lot about pot not being as bad as everyone makes it to be, and when sold in pharmacutical safety, the pot itself is not as hazardous as street drugs. I thought it was pointless, however, for him to play around with different ways to smoke it, I didn't see anything remotely educational about that other than to give teenagers more bad ideas.
The results are not all that conclusive, not nearly as bad as Super Size Me at the end of the road. I learned a little, I sympathize with those who have terminal or painful illnesses who need prescriptions, and I think I would rather watch someone get high than drunk.
I think he was brave, informative and original in this quest, even if it is a knock-off. However, unless you are a user, or curious for someone else's sake, there is no point in educating yourself or entertaining yourself with this. There are better things to do with your time.
