SimianFox's Full Review: Stonestreet Merlot 2004 750ml
I picked up a bottle of Stonestreet Merlot 2004 at Ralphs on sale for $15.00. I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very deep and slightly tannic merlot with hits of red cherry, raspberry, and a bit of chocolate and coffee at the finish. In many respect this merlot is not the characteristically soft and approachable nature Merlot is more commonly known for, but rather the winemaker has chosen to embrace and bring out the intensity of the grape in a more concentrated and focused style. The richness and deep fruit hit your palate immediately and the wine maintains a very concentrated texture on the mid palate. This merlot displays moderate complexity, some of which diminishes at the mid-palate, but retains a pleasing and lingering finish with hints of espresso and dark chocolate. This wine is fairly well balanced and retains a nice texture and full mouthfeel throughout. Definitely a Merlot for Cabernet fans, and possibly for those who prefer the spicer Syrah and Zinfandel varietals. I would not hesitate to pair this with dark meat, possibly steak, ribs, or prime rib because of the intensity and richness wine displays. For those looking for a cheese paring I would suggest paring with a rich and creamy Gorgonzola or Camembert. I believe this wine is a steal for $15.00 and could easily be a good value over $20.00.
89 Points.
