| drdevience's Full Review: Saw 2 |
After having been suitably impressed with Saw, I made it top priority to find a copy of Saw 2. I liked this sequel so much that I might just venture to the theater this week and catch the third in the series.
I am one of those folks who is usually utterly disappointed by sequels, but this tale of a very interesting serial killer type of guy is enthralling. This series is the brain child of two unknown Melbourne guys and has just taken off like gangbusters for a reason. It rawks hard.
In these days of non-scary horror flicks, Leigh Whannell & Darren Lynn Bousman have managed to rival even Silence of the Lambs. They came up with the concept and wrote it together, then Bousman took the directors seat while Whannell got in front of the camera as Adam. What a team they make! No wonder they are Australia's darlings at the moment.
The story takes off where the first ended. Jigsaw is back and this time puts several people in his warehouse of horrors. They all have a connection, but part of the game is to figure out what that connection is and to try to get out alive. This one has a few more twists than the first as Jigsaw plays cat-n-mouse with the local PD while they watch events unfold via remote video feed. Plus, the son of one of the cops is trapped in the game.
Twists and turns galore with this one, folks. Nothing is what it seems. Pay special attention and you might be able to figure them out on your own... but don't count on it.
Shawnee Smith is back as Amanda, and does an even better job with the role than the first time. That is saying a lot. We also have New Kids On The Block's Donnie Wahlberg as the cop, and father of one of the intended victims in the game. Wahlberg is amazing in this.
Saw 2 is Rated R for grisly violence and gore, terror, language and drug content in the US. Sweden says 15 and up. Me? Well, there is all that in it. But the main thing you have to think about is the psychological aspects. If you would be comfortable letting your child watch Silence of the Lambs, then you can pretty much let them watch this. Forget the language and all that, it is all about whether or not your kid is prone to night terrors or not. I say 12 and up, depending on the kid. I would have let my kid watch it at 5 if she wanted to, but then not much really scared her. She adored Freddy...
Saw and Saw 2 are both very, very good, especially coming out of the blue from two unknowns. Again, I have to go with 5 full stars. Excellent sequel... now to see the 3rd one.
