| remf2112's Full Review: Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner |
The Boston Brewing Company, as I've stated before, is distinctive amongst American breweries for making a large number of brews, all of which are non-compromising in what market niche they occupy. In this they are remarkably similar to what a large German brewery like Tucher, Spaten or Henninger is. When Koch and company decide to call something a "pilsner," you can bet your boots they take the word seriously and mean to live up to it. In this they stand at the opposite pole of something like Miller Lite, which also styles itself a "pilsner." If there were still blasphemy laws on the books, Miller would be looking at mandatory time for that.
Sam Adams Golden Pilsner was the first micro pilsner available nationwide. I mostly drink this in the summer and fall.
This beer pours to a thick, creamy, persistent head. It is of, appropriately enough, a golden color, a little darker than Miller (High Life, not the Lite). Like any good pilsner, it is quite light. The immediate sensation of this is of strong hops, with malty flavors coming out shortly thereafter. There is an aftertaste, quite hoppy in nature, but it is short-lived. The hoppy taste is especially evident on the sides of the tongue.
Boston Brewery clearly meant to make a German pils here and succeeded. While many German beers are old by the time they get to your kitchen (and some even are in green bottles), Golden Pilsner is fresh and its taste will pretty often beat its Euro-competition. Indeed, the only German pils that I would regularly take over this that you can get in this part of the country is Spaten. And even Spaten can be a risk. Thanks to Boston's habit of putting an expiration date on its beers, you can rest secure that you will get the drinking experience you were meant to have.
Today this beer went with roast pork and mashed potatoes, but this beer will also go with anything. I would defy anyone to concoct a meal that this brew would be out of place in. I suppose it could overpower an extremely bland meal, say a mashed potato sandwich, but I'm pretty safe in my knowledge that not many epinionators have that on the menu.
Anyone should try this drink. Even a dyed in the wool lover of the dark drinks (like wingdman) would probably like this. Quality makes its own friends. That being the case, Golden Pilsner will never be bereft of them, as everyone I know whose tried it, likes it.
Golden Pilsner can be found nationwide in any larger liquor store. Some have complained about the price, but I got these for $5.99 a six pack, exactly a buck more than Bud. It's a buck well spent.
