| smoke0845's Full Review: Negra Modelo |
I had heard about this beer before when I saw neon signs for it at the Border Cafe in Cambridge, MA. (there's another one in Saugus, MA).
But the inspiration to try this beer was Bruguru's review. Earlier today I went to the liquor store to get Budweiser for me and my friend, and decided to look around at the other beers, ales, and IPA's the store had to offer, I saw Negra Modelo but decided to get it some other time considering the price.
Negra Modelo is a Mexican beer. It's brewed by the Cerveceria Modelo, S.A DE C.V, Mexico. And is imported by the Gambrinus company in San Antonio, Texas. This is the same brewing company that makes Corona Extra.
I had an idea tonight: I wanted to write a review of a beer for Epinions. And both beers I had in mind were varieties I had never drank before: Negra Modelo and Narragansett (it's not listed on Epinions). I went to another liquor store. I saw the Mexican beers, Corona and Dos Equis six packs but no Negra Modelo. I looked in the next refrigerator and there they were.
As far as the name goes "Negra Modelo" goes, I like that the first word is feminine.
I was a little confused by the bottles at first. The gold foil on the neck like a champagne bottle may look nice to some, but for me I like it a little bit. I wasn't sure if I should use my fingernail to peel off the foil, or go straight to it with the bottle opening part of my can opener. Once I tried the former, and once I tried the latter.
Negra Modelo is a brown color and has a sweet Citrusy smell. It tastes like barley with a charred flavoring added. I don't know what percent alcohol it is because the label doesn't say.
I liked the charred taste, it's interesting. I don't know if the charred taste comes with black/dark lagers, as this is the first dark lager I've ever had.
I didn't like the stubby bottle, it's far from resembling the beer bottles I know with the long necks and not-as-stubby bases. Because of this, it feels like I'm drinking something else, not beer.
Six Packs - They're relatively easy to find in Cambridge and Somerville, MA. I don't know about everywhere else.
The only Mexican beer I ever had before tonight was Corona Extra, and that was in 2002 at a friend's birthday party. It had been so long since I had a Mexican beer.
