jackie_skye55's Full Review: Monopoly Spider Man 3? Edition
My husband found a pretty good deal on this game and picked it up for $20 (the regular monopoly was $35). **Of course, I just noticed that it wasn't such a great deal as now it is marked down to $10 in Walmart*** My seven year old son absolutely loves spiderman and we wanted to play a game with him that would help him with his money skills.
This worked. He had a blast playing and we made it tougher by giving him larger bills for rent than he needed and he would have to count out the change back to us. He got quite good at it by the time our 2 hour game was up. He's been asking to play again ever since (he won, by the way).
It's your typical monopoly game with a spiderman theme linked to it. Instead of Boardwalk or Park Place, you get places like The Green Goblins Lair and the Osborn Penthouse. (One of the properties is a burning building, so we had a lot of fun joking about collecting rent on that!) The chance and community chest cards are changed to red spiderman and venom cards. All of the pieces are characters from the movie as well that include three spiderman poses, green goblin 2, venom and sandman.
The rules and concept are all the same as regular monopoly. The purpose of the game, as everyone pretty much knows, is to land on and buy as many properties as you can. The more properties you own, the more rent you can collect when other players land on your assets. The goal is to collect monopolies, or all the properties in a certain color category. This way you can start building houses and hotels (and this one actually has different hotel styles, which I thought was cute. I remember there being just one style last time I played regular monopoly.) The ultimate goal of the game is to make everyone else go bankrupt.
Simple, just like the regular one. It's a great game for teaching the kids a value of a dollar and getting them to work on their money skills though. It's also pretty good for their attention skills, as they need to be alert when someone lands on their space in order to collect their rent from that person. Reading the chance and community chest cards is just an added bonus to improve their reading skills.
I think my son would have had just as much fun playing the regular version with mom and dad (it's more the point that we play a game with him) but still, I think he enjoyed seeing his favorite character all over the board. Since it was cheaper than the regular version, this is one time I didn't mind succumbing to hype and media.
