With the release of the 3rd movie, High School Musicalis more popular than ever. My daughter became a fan recently, and has asked for several of the dolls for Christmas this year. The Chad doll is one she has asked for more than any other (with the exception of Sharpay) because she is a fan of the doll's real life counterpart in his other movies and music outside of High School Musical. I finally found a Chad doll in this particular line which contains an extra "Summer" outfit.
This High School Musical 2 Chad Fashion Doll is made of the character Chad Danforthwho plays Troy's best friend in the movies. Chad Danforth's real life counterpart is young actor/singer Corbin Bleu, and so this doll is supposed to look like him. The makers have given the Chad doll distinct features, but it really does not look very much like "Chad". Clothes alone wouldn't make up for that (I never remember what the guys wear) and help the resemblance, so I guess they attempted to help you recognize him, with the hair. The Chad doll has a big halo of really curly hair. It's not too bad, but it is really very tightly curled and I think if they would have made them a little looser, the doll would have had the bouncy curls that Chad/Corbin actually has. It is dark (deep) brown with highlights mixed in.
The Chad doll comes with two outfits. The first (the one he is wearing) consists of a lime green shirt with the words "I majored in VACATION" on the front. He is also wearing dark denim flared jeans and white sneakers with blue accents. He is also wearing a necklace. It's fairly simple, but it's a cute outfit. Like the other HSM dolls, it's body frame is a lot leaner than the traditional male dolls from Mattel(think: Ken), more than likely because this is supposed to portray a teen. So, the clothes would have trouble fitting most male dolls. Also, he bends in several places and clothes that can be put on easily with these type of dolls are nearly impossible to fit onto dolls that do not bend. But, the HSM male dolls can change clothes with other male HSM dolls with no problem, if your child is like mine and likes to mix things up.
The second outfit is the summer outfit. It consists of an orange tee shirt, board shorts, and orange sandals. The board shorts are of various colors in varying stripes. The colors are orange, blue, white, and green in several shades of each color. They also have a tied drawstring, but it is an accent and does not really work. The sandals, I can say with complete confidence, will never stay on the doll's feet.
The Chad doll bends in several places, as I mentioned. His neck will move from side to side and his waist will bend back and forth, allowing him to be placed in a seated position. His shoulders and elbows also bend. He is really well made and I see him as very durable with normal play, but if your child is really rough with him, I can see his limbs snapping at the bends. Particularly the elbows. The doll's hair also seems to be really well sewn, but I have never really had any isue with Mattel dolls, so I expected as much.
The only thing that would make this doll better is if he could sing/play music. But, since he can't, an imaginative child can still act out musicals with this doll (especially if accompanied with a CD or DVD). With the exception of the newest prom editions, this remains my child's favorite Chad doll, and the extra outfit is a great bonus. It goes great with the other HSM dolls in this line, and I could see any High School Musical fan enjoying this doll. I recommend to all HSM fans!
