bilbopooh's Full Review: Margret Rey and H.A. Rey - Curious George Goes Cam...
Every year, my family spends a weekend camping at Little Pine State Park in central Pennsylvania. It's always a terrific time, but for many years, before we could sit around the campfire roasting marshmallows, we had to assemble our tents, a task which always took a bit of coordination and cleverness. Then we graduated to the pop-up camper, which had its own set of complications. This year, we veered as far from "roughin' it" as we could by renting tiny cottages with no assembly required. I don't think we missed that aspect of the tenting experience too much...
In Curious George Goes Camping, a newer book written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, putting up a tent is just one hurdle George faces when he and his yellow-hatted best friend arrive at a campground for a weekend of fun. The illustrations of George struggling with the ropes and poles are among the funniest in the book, in part because they are so reminiscent of scenes I have witnessed. Why must tent assembly be such a hassle?
Beyond tents and campfires, this books touches upon other aspects of camping such as pumping water and going on walks through the wilderness. Before George's little adventure is over, he sees a variety of forest creatures and has a traumatic encounter with one of them, leading him to flee and eventually end up in the perfect vantage point to spy a disaster in the making and formulate a plan to stop it.
The book maintains the old-fashioned feel of the illustrations, including the somewhat drab color palette. Most of the animals appearing throughout the book are some shade of brown, as is much of the landscape. Green also shows up quite a bit, in the grass and in the leaves on the trees. All of the action takes place at the campground, which is riddled with large canvas tents and the occasional pop-up. No ostentatious RVs here!
For a latter-day Curious George story, this camping tale is fairly involved, with several separate but related incidents and pictures that evoke the stories that were part of the original series. George's misadventures stem more from panic than disobedience in the face of curiosity, and there might even be a lesson or two in there about ways to ensure a safe and happy camping trip.
