amyk49's Full Review: Lb Danskin Weighted Toning Ball
I do most of my training in the gym, but I also like to do some basic fitness exercises at home occasionally. I'd been using various weights of medicine balls at the gym, and decided I'd like to have one at home. When I saw this weighted toning ball from Danskin, I thought it would work well for me.
~ Product Description
The Danskin Weighted Toning Ball is a 6 lb. weighted ball with a squeezable vinyl shell. This is designed to help improve core strength, functional movement, muscle tone, strength, and flexibility. It can be used in place of traditional cast iron weights for many exercises (but not all!) Included with the ball is a handy follow-along workout poster depicting several exercises using the toning ball.
The ball is a rather pleasing green color with white swirls, and it features the Danskin logo, and the 6 lb. weight is printed on it. This is helpful in case you have other balls of different weights.
I found the Danskin Weighted Toning Ball at my local Modell's Sporting Goods store for $16.99.
~ My Experience
I like to use a weighted ball for boxing training and core strength moves, such as a pullover crunch, where you do a situp, starting with your hands above your head holding the ball, then as you sit up bring your hands forward over your abdomen.
There are a variety of exercise you can do with this ball, include tricep extensions, lunges extending your hands as you hold the ball, exercises holding the ball between your knees, and others. The poster included is very helpful to give you visual descriptions of different ways to use this weighted ball.
Now - one cool thing about this weighted ball, as opposed to medicine balls I've used in the gym, is that the outer surface is soft. So soft, in fact, that you can squeeze it and hold it with one hand, and I have very small hands. That soft outer shell also helps protect you from injuries. The worst injury I've experienced in the gym was from a medicine ball which was dropped on my chest. I had bruised ribs and a good deal of pain for several weeks. The soft outer shell on the Danskin Weighted Toning Ball will help soften the blow should you accidentally drop the ball.
Another thing, I'm not sure if it's good or bad really, the weighted part of the ball inside the shell shifts as you move the ball. It's like there's a weighted core inside that moves a little bit when you move the ball. That shifting is fairly minor however, and not a big deal, but the weight of the ball will shift slightly from position to position. Overall I don't think it matters, but is just something to note. I definitely prefer the slight shifting and the added safety of the soft outer shell to the hard, unforgiving, yet non-shifting medicine balls at the gym.
~ Final Thoughts
The Danskin Weighted Toning Ball is a nice addition to your at-home exercise equipment and training routine. I love the soft, squeezable about shell which makes it easy to grip and provides added safety. Danskin has also included a helpful workout poster to get you started on ways to use this weighted ball. Try it!
