My daughter and I were introduced to Bill Peet's children's books by reading Capyboppy. Since then we were hooked as we both loved the stories that are a longer length than most children's books and so interesting that we don't stop until the very last word! My daughter tends to get really upset at any sign of bullying and this story made her hopping mad. How could the mean old farmer aptly named Lucifer treat Ella the elephant so badly? My daughter said quite a few times she wished Ella would kick him back!
Ella is an elephant in the circus. She got such a big head as she was the main attraction. Forget carrying her own weight, she had people for that. Ella is a pampered spoiled elephant! Until one day she is left behind and crew leaves her as the train pulls away. She starts walking hoping to catch up only to be caught by a farmer. This farmer carries a rifle and is mean as snakes! He forces her to work hard and hits her at anything she does like eating apples off of the tree. As Ella thinks on her predicament, she thinks with sadness about her life before and how spoiled she had been. Hearing the train coming the next spring, she is brave enough to break out of the farmer's barn and catch the train! The circus crew are very happy to see her and have no idea what could have unspoiled this very spoiled elephant named Ella!
I wondered how they could forget a big elephant like Ella as they left her behind. My daughter wanted Ella to break away from the farmer after all she was much bigger than he was! This 48 page book has four to ten lines of text on most every page with a couple not having any text at all. The watercolor illustrations seem faded and aged. Most of the pictures are of Ella's new life on the farm, how hard she has to work for the farmer. Her facial expressions say it all, so expressive for an elephant! Of course more time is spent on Ella's time on the farm so the book is a bit of a downer. We felt sorry for Ella as she was treated so badly. Recommended for ages 1st grade and up.
