Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk arrvied in my mailbox at work. I didn't pay much attention, since I get lots of books at work. I teach so get textbooks and advise for the college paper so get other types of new books as well.
My boys had the giggles, and I figured out they were checking out the new book - Snuff - I tossed on the table. On the back cover . . . "Six hundred dudes. One porn queen. A world record for the ages."
OK. You'd probably laugh too if you saw a book that said that on your Mom's kitchen table. Sigh.
I don't have an issue with blue material though do not buy it. Different strokes (pun intended). When I was a teen I checked out some X stuff. Overall I found the quality to be poor and do not tolerate poor plot planning and writing in any genre.
Palahniuk is listed as an award winning author with movies made from some of his works, so I did check out Snuff. I thought perhaps it would be better than it sounded from the back cover; however, I should have gone with my first instinct.
On the very first page, Palahniuk used the word dude/dudes six times. These "dudes" were standing around waiting to set a record for sex with porn queen Cassie Wright. Dude is an old and tired word to start with, and the gross overuse of the word set the tone for this poorly written story.
I yawned my way through overviews of guys who for whatever reason show up to be in on this modern day record quest for the most partners in one day for sex. I suppose the concept is unique; however, it's really not very interesting. There's only so much you can get from the green room with "dudes" waiting for quick sex to set a record.
Folks who like a good story and good writing will not be impressed with this book. I don't think those looking for porn will either. It misses on all counts. It's basically a dull sex book - very short and quick to read but no real satisfaction on any level. The only real plus I can think of is that it did put me to sleep fast.
