Majestic trees tower above the rich delta stretching all around Big Oak Tree State Park, a National Natural Landmark. The 1,005-acre park gets its name from giant trees, a number of which have been identified as the largest, or champions, of their species. A boardwalk through the park allows visitors to get a close-up view of this remnant of the vast swamp forest that once covered Missouri's Bootheel. Displays in the nature center interpret this vanishing landscape. The park, designed for day use, has a small lake for fishing.<br><br><b>Directions:</b> 14 miles south of East Prairie on Hwy. 102 in Mississippi County. |
