Write-Off: "Songs of a Broken Heart"

Sep 12 '00

Since I have been fortunate enough to be happily married to the same wonderful, sexy man for the past thirty-one years, I never felt that heartbreak songs related to me directly. Yet there are certain songs which express such universal emotion and strike a chord of such deeply felt loss or sorrow, that they stir a poignant, sad feeling within me while listening to the mournful lyrics.

Here are some of my all-time favorites, spanning four decades.

1.“The Way We Were “- This was Barbra Streisand at her best. I can still see the scene in the movie of the same name, with her slightly sweeping the hair out of Robert Redford’s eyes, with this song playing in the background, as she realizes that her true soul mate is never to be hers again.

2.“MacArthur Park”- Richard Harris sang this song the way it was meant to be sung. Madonna should have known better than attempting to try to remake perfection. He sang with the passion of lost love in an unforgettable way.

3..”It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”-I look forward to Celine Dion coming out of early retirement!

4..”I Will Survive”- This was Gloria Gaynor at her finest hour, and my favorite song of the disco era.

5..”Against All Odds”- This is my favorite song by Phil Collins.

6..”Stop in the Name of Love”- What woman at some point in her life didn’t pretend at least once that she was Diana Ross singing with the Supremes this classic song of heartbreak? I know I have made a fool of myself , with a few of my friends or relatives, at more than one party when this was played on a karaoke machine (especially after a few drinks!) .

7..”Runaway”- If you can remember this classic from the early sixties, you are doing pretty well! Del Shannon’s star was bright for a very short time, but he really made an impact with this one when it was released. It was the longest number one rock song on the charts up to this time, until it was knocked out of this position by a new group from England known as the “Beatles”.

8.“Yesterday”-Speaking of the Beatles, this is my personal favorite of theirs.

9.“Don’t Cry Out Loud”-Melissa Manchester is great. I don’t know why we don’t hear anything sung by her anymore, but she has a beautiful, powerful and soulful sound.

10..”Time to Say Goodbye”- This song ‘s haunting melody strikes the universal chord within all of us when we must at last say good bye to someone we love. The beautiful lyrical voice of Andrea Bocelli reaches deep into my soul.

I would like to thank Kristina (Kristinafh) so much for inviting me to participate in this write-off. It really made me stop and think and it was lots of fun! Please make sure you read all of the other writers in this write-off!!
