:) I like the Charlie Brown one. And the Grinch (cartoon version). And Its a Wonderful Life.
I also like that one with Snow Miser and Heat Miser (or at least I find the song kinda catchy:) ).

The older the better. They truly don't make 'em like they used to...
Warner's madcap Christmas in Connecticut (1944) with the incomparable Stanwyck and corpulent co-star Sydney Greenstreet; an under-rated comedic actor (and chronic scene-stealer). Drama or comedy, Barbara Stanwyck could do it all.
RKO's Holiday Affair (1949) with the lovely, lonely Janet Leigh as a (sob!) newly-unemployed single-parent (and war widow - stock-up on Kleenex, folks!) - thanks to her being revealed by toy dept. salesman Robert Mitchum as a spy for a competing department store.
Funny and heartwarming, if that be your yuletide desire... |

Bad Santa (because I am vulgar and ill-behaved)
Christmas Vacation (because I secretly want to light my house like the Griswold's)
A Christmas Story (because of the year my husband and I both had the stomach flu on Christmas day and the marathon of that movie kept our young children entertained all afternoon)
The holidays do bring out the best in me....;) |

I will see your B.S. (Bad Santa) and raise you one White Christmas - Bing and the gang were a tradition at the Fish house; seeing that a local TV station showed it faithfully each year before VCRs came along.
Christmas Vacation because my cat loves to tackle the tree and chew on the Christmas lights - and this film serves as both a warning and retribution; if I could just distract him from his coniferous destruction long enough for him to pay attention to the screen at the appropriate moment.
I just wish Imogene Coca's Aunt Edna had made it from the original Vacation film. But this disappointment is understandable seeing that she [spoiler alert!] expired en route to Wally World during the first one [end spoiler alert!].
I've never viewed A Christmas Story. It was such a hit at the time of release that I can recite the plot and tag lines "You'll put your eye out!", but for some reason never got around to it. And now, there must be 75 reviews of it already.
I have, however, viewed and reviewed The Great Rupert; a Christmas comedy about an animated rodent living in Jimmy Durante's attic. That one puts me in the black forever as far as Christmas movie karma is concerned. My alleged and perceived holiday video shortcomings have all been magically erased... |

Nothing beats It's A Wonderful Life.
If I'm looking for mindless fun I have to go with Robbie The Reindeer, Hooves Of Fire. The good British version with Steve Coogan and Ricky Gervais ... before some bonehead decided to re-dub all the voices with Ben Stiller and Britney Spears.
Travesty. |

That sounds cool, I'll have to look for that (original Robbie the Reindeer, I've seen Its a Wonderful Life 2 dozen times). I always prefer the original to dubs. |

:) I don't know. I'd seen it a few times way back when but kinda find it goes the other way a bit for me (as in I've gotten a bit tired of it). It has great quotes and some decent gags but the voiceover has gotten old for me.

RE: Favorite holiday movies
I watched Miracle on 34th Street again - not one of my all-time favorites, but I seem to enjoy it more as the years roll on. Films populated with stars who led somewhat (or extremely) tragic lives are kinda colored by that fact - don't know why that is with me. Natalie Wood certainly fits the category...
I hear they're planning a re-make of Scrooge - the working title is A Bear Stearns / Lehman Bros. Christmas.
Coming soon to an abandoned theater near you!
BTW, whatever happened to Pia Zadora's Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? Or was it the Plutocrats Santa stomped?
That one's gotta be in the database. Keywords: turkey, cheese, has-beens... |

RE: Favorite holiday movies
Even though it's almost Christmas, a weekend visit to my brother's house found me watching the truly dopey Run, Fat Boy, Run and the Meg Ryan remake of George Cukor's 1939 classic The Women.
Believe me... that's one dumbly-dramatic and estrogen-filled double feature.
Luckily, there was plenty of Jamaican beer in the fridge... |

RE: Favorite holiday movies
And don't forget New Year's themed films like Billy Wilder's The Apartment, which concludes with the playing (and drinking) of gin on New Year's eve.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World! ran forever on New Year's eve - not sure why, though... a long, funny movie (did I mention l-o-n-g?).
In the Boston TV market, the traditional Three Stooges marathon runs on TV 38 from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am for those who have access and desire such silliness. For me it's yes on both counts...
Happy New Year, Everyone!!! |
