Getting products sent by companies
I am going to post this in sporting goods as well. Some of you who have known me know I've been in many categories:) In many, books, beauty, I believe health and H & G companies send products to be reviewed. They send them for free obviously hoping for a positive review but I got a lot of Mary Kay items and most I liked but I remember one I didn't and I said so.
In any case, not sure how it is done but just a thought for openroad to ponder:) jo |

RE: Getting products sent by companies
I've never had anything sent by a company for me to review, but if I did - I imagine I'd try it out and review it - just making sure I said that it was sent to me by the company somewhere in the review so I was upfront about it.

With the Mary Ksy stuff we actually put the seller on the bottom of the page. I would definitely say it was given by the company - I agree. Well so far I don't have any offers:) jo

Howdy Again
I have read of reviewers in other categories having things sent to them for reviewing. Man I'd sure like to review fishing lures or maybe a tent ;) I'm not sure we would ever get things to review but it'd be neat if we did. I have received some movies from aspiring young directors to review but I saved them the heartache and didn't review it. It was still neat that all of the TR's and Advisers were sent the films to watch and review. |

You and me both
It is happening in home and garden by the gazillions. I wrote to two companies with no luck. I wonder how H & G proceeds. Do the leads contact the companies? Does epinions? Seriously if they can why can't we? The Mary Kay stuff we got was through an independent seller. These things are from Proctor and Gamble, etc.
Abraham, what can we do??? jo |

RE: You and me both
I'm sure that the companies that are doing the promotions in H&G probably spend a lot more money on advertisement and product launches than outdoor gear companies - hence that's probably why we're not getting buried in free products to review.
It's worth asking though - I used to review outdoor gear for an outdoor organization I was a member of - we'd get to keep the product for the review. I'd sure love to do it again - and would love the products.

Does anyone know where and or how I should go about getting products mailed to me, so that I can review them. I only want free products (no returns).
please email me if you know the best way to go about this: m_e_designs@yahoo.com

You should speak to the Category Leads who should be able to let you know if there are programs for Epinions members to receive items to review. Here in Outdoor Gear we don't have a specific program.

I wonder if there was a way we could get something started. With the number of new outdoor gear products that come out, I'm sure that at least some companies would like reviews of their products so as to differentiate them all the others.
Anyone want to try to figure out if it's possible?

RE: Getting products sent by companies
I've written to two companies, New Balance, which is in MA as you probably know and Spri. Never heard from anyone. I think it might take more than just me to get this done though perhaps asking H & G and books how they get their stuff is probably a good idea. I had an author send me a book I reviewed but he did it on his own i.e. no one solicited him. Jo |

Well, we can keep trying and see if we can get any info out of H&G and/or books. I used to do reviews of equipment for a hiking club I belonged to. Only a couple of things a year - but some of the stuff, and it was like 10 or more years ago - I still use today.

I'll have to keep this in mind for next summer. It's probably just a matter of finding the right person. I work for a major retailer and even in the corporate office we often get free products that the sales & marketing teams get from manufacturers. Too bad it's not tents/hiking boots/lanterns, etc... -Dave |

Yeah, now we just have to find that person. Anyone know anyone in an outdoor gear company?
I'll see if I can find out anything from the hiking club I used to do reviews for - maybe they have a contact or something since I think they still do it.
Does anyone know how the H&G stuff started? Was it the marketing firms contacting the CLs or something else?
