State & National Parks
I (as well as most people) have heard about Yellowstone, Yosemite, and other big name parks. What I would like is some suggestions on lesser known state & national parks. I'm looking for great scenery, wildlife, camping, fishing places. Any place in the United States is fine, but midwestern and southern state suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Julie |

Wish I could help you, but my experience is strictly the Western States and a few in the mountain region. |

RE: State & National Parks
We've been to several in Indiana over the past three years because we like to stay at the lodges - actually just got back from one today. My favorite is Clifty Falls State Park in Madison, Indiana - it has waterfalls and interesting trails. The lodge with the most to do is Potowatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana. And, of course, folks come from miles around to see the dunes in my area - Warren Dunes in Sawyer, Michigan is the nicest park to see them from, and it has a great beach and a claypit!

Thanks. That one is a possiblity for spring/summer of next year. I'll be visiting Boston, MA and traveling to Bar Harbor, ME. I'll have to look into a side trip through New Hampshire.

Western states are fine, particularly Colorado. I've really been wanting to visit there. I barely remember Pike's Peak from my childhood. :)

Oh...Indiana is good. I'm close enough to do 3 day weekend trips. :)
I love waterfalls so Clifty Falls State Park sounds good. But, what the heck is a claypit?

You can play in the clay! You know, like elephants do? We used to paint it all over our bodies. It isn't like mud, it's like the gray clay you used to sculpt with in elementary school.

I'm sure if you are going to Maine you've got Arcadia National Park on your list, but if you are going to be really south, The Everglades is like no other place in America, but not in the heat of summer! :)

RE: State & National Parks
The biggest park in the 48 states is Adirondack Park in New York, which is bigger than Yellowstone. It's a much different sort of park than Yellowstone, as it has towns inside the park, but the wildlife and scenery are excellent. According to Wikipedia:
[Adirondack] Park covers some 6.1 million acres (24,700 kmē), a land area about the size of Vermont, or of the Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks combined.
A couple other state parks that made an impression are Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee and Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. If you watched the movie Galaxy Quest, you saw some scenes shot in Goblin Valley State Park, which is definitely an other-worldly location.
Central Park in New York City is a wonder, but it's a city park and not a state park. Every time I go there, I discover something new.
I haven't been to all the big national parks but the one that caught me by surprise was Channel Islands National Park, off the California coast. (There is regular boat service from Oxnard, CA, and possibly elsewhere.) You can only visit Anacapa Island and it was lovely the day I was there.

We are definitely doing Acadia! My mom is going so camping is definitely out. That's why we'll be staying in Bar Harbor. The only way we could get her to go is by promising her 2 full days in Boston (civilization). :)
Riding an air boat through the Everglades is on my bucket list! But, then again I am going to have to live a very long time to finish off my list. :)

I've been to Central Park. There is a whole different type of wildlife there. :)
I used to live in Moorpark, CA and wish I had known about Channel Islands National Park then.
I've visited the Smoky Mountain National Park a couple of times, but haven't heard of Fall Creek Falls State Park. I'll look into that one the next time I'm in Tennessee, thanks!
I've been to Flaming Gorge in Utah, but "Goblin Valley" sounds really interesting. There's a chance I'll be visiting Southern Wyoming/Northern Utah again. I'll have to check on where the Goblin Valley State Park is located in the state.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I did an airboat ride in the Everglades last year (May 2007) and it was both affordable and lots of fun. I think it was $20 per person for a ride that was billed at 30 minutes but was closer to an hour. My wife and I were the only people on the boat, which probably had seating for 20 people. The pilot took us through the Everglades to a camp site and let us walk around for 15 minutes. Then we got back in the boat and he found us various birds to photograph. As I said, the whole thing lasted close to an hour. It was noisy but otherwise fairly smooth, if breezy. I have an edited video that I shot of my ride but it's 65 MB and too big to e-mail. Do you have a site that I can upload it to?
Edit: I just looked at a map and Moorpark is right down the road from Oxnard. Too bad you didn't get a chance to go to Channel Islands National Park. Here is one of hundreds of pictures we took on Anacapa Island.

When we have guests from out of state they always want to take an airboat ride, we live such a short ride away from one of the highways that lead right into the Glades so it's never a problem and I always enjoy them myself, though now it might be difficult to do with my back the way it is...we really did see gaters on every one of the rides I've been on but never a Panther or Cougar...lots of great birds and huge nests up in the tree tops.. |

Hi again Bob,
I'll email you about the site. I would definitely like to see the video, but not sure what you are looking for to upload it to.
Love the pic of Channel Islands National Park. I wouldn't mind seeing more of them! Who knows, maybe I'll make it out that way again.

6 years ago when I did a "women only no husbands allowed" trip to Miami Beach a couple of us wanted to do alligator alley (or any where we could get pics of alligators). One woman in our car got so upset at the thought of being around alligators she got sick. We had to turn around and never got another chance to go again.
Of course I did go on a deep sea fishing trip. That was amazing...being out on the ocean, no land in sight, silverfish everywhere looking like handfuls of coins being spilled into the water. I didn't do any fishing, but the Captain let me and a friend do the Titanic, leaning over the bow scene, all the way back to shore. Good grief, now I need to add a trip out on the ocean to my list.

There were alligators and large iguanas EVERYWHERE when I was in South Florida in May 2007. You couldn't miss 'em. I was walking around Fairchild Gardens in Coral Gables when a large iguana fell out of a tree practically on top of me. We did a hike in Everglades National Park and were within 12 feet of alligators of various sizes. No fences between us and them, either. The quantity of alligators was astonishing... we counted something like 27 in one pond that was perhaps 150 feet long and 30 feet wide. We went right over multiple alligators on the airboat ride.
A highlight of the trip was when I spotted a Florida panther crossing the road about 1/4-mile ahead of me. They are very rare and seldom seen in the wild. My wife was looking at a map and missed it!
As far as uploading the video, if you have access to an FTP site or have an account at a site that permits uploads, that would be perfect. The video is about four minutes but the quality is pretty high... better than standard-def TV quality but not up to HD standards. It's a WMV (Windows Media) file.
Edit: Here's another shot I took on Anacapa Island. It was a beautiful day.
