Memory foam too hot?

I was just about to buy a Serta memory foam type pillowtop mattress when a friend of mine told me not to get them because they are too hot. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Got your message and only wish that I knew the answer.

Isn't there such a thing as a cool mattress protectors that could offset the problem? Or cool sheets? Do any reviews mention this?

Hope someone knows,

Lorace

RE: Memory foam too hot?

I have a foam mattress, and never had any trouble with it being too hot, even when it was a hundred degrees all summer. It's ruined me for all other mattresses, too.

I'm not certain, but I've always heard that high thread count sheets will keep your bed and pillows cool.

RE: Memory foam too hot?

We had one for years (the topper) and my husband still has a memory foam pillow -- haven't noticed any hotness from either.

We did change our matress about 6 months back to a "built in" type system....

again with no problems.

We have a 1.5-inch-thick memory foam-style pad on top of the regular mattress and it is a little warmer than the mattress without the pad. I think you'll feel the difference but it is not huge. It's definitely nice in the winter and I have to let parts hang out from under the covers in the summer a bit more. (I won't mention which parts.) There's no question in my mind that it is warmer, particularly in the summer.

It tends to mute the bouncing around from when one person moves on the bed. I toss and turn a lot at night, so my wife appreciates this.

We got the foam pad at Costco for around $150 or so. It definitely is comfortable... but warmer.

Weird, how we all respond differently to things. Like just thinking about a foam mattress really hurts me. Yet my only experience has been in foam pillows which I dearly hate with all my heart.

But knowing who's talking about the foam mattress, I think I'd even dare to try one. If you like it, Jessica, then I take your word it must be good.

But PLEASE let me have my Feather pillows. They're the only kind I can get a good night's rest with.

Kimm, so nice to see you here! Good input!

RE: Memory foam too hot?

My parents have one like what Sam's Club currently sells. It's a pillowtop mattress, but the pillow part is made of memory foam and covered well. They say it never gets too hot, though.

I will tell you this - it is the softest bed I've ever seen.

Foam can't get wet?

I really like foam mattresses - and every time I go to Brookstone I have to lie on the temperpedic sample :-D But I had a coworker years ago tell me he spilled water on his foam mattress and it was completely ruined.

Is this really an issue that it can't get wet? And if that's true for the mattress, is it the same for the pillowtop/mattress pads you guys mentioned? And finally, if it can't get wet - how do you clean the darn thing?

I'm going to be getting a new mattress next year so I'd like to know!

Thanks!!

I'm a newlywed so I gotta have something that can handle a little moisture from time to time.

RE: Memory foam too hot?

I nave been on a Tempurpedic mattress for nearly two years now. I am very sensitive to hot bedding and can't sleep if it gets too hot. It does insulate but if we keep the room cool it seems to work fine for me. As far as wetness, I wouldn't run a hose across it but with an absorbent pad (thin) we haven't had problems. We just take the pad off and wash it when it gets sticky. :)

I got it at the recommendation of my sleep specialist. I haven't sued him yet.

You know what, Lorace? I also hate foam pillows, but this is completely different. It took me awhile to get used to the foam mattress, too, because there is no "spring" to it when you lie down and move around, but I'd never go with anything else at this point. My husband has some chronic back pain that he is far too young for, and it's helped him out a lot. When I go to a hotel now, I always think the bed is horrible. Awhile ago, we were at a really nice hotel and I asked my husband "What kind of horrible mattress is this?" We lifted up the bedding and it was a Sterns and Foster, which used to be the bed of my dreams.

Hmm - it obviously hasn't affected my insomnia, though. I have got to figure out how to be asleep at 2:30 in the morning, and not writing message board posts.

The trick is to get a laptop, get all comfy in bed (with the lights off) and in no time you'll start drifting to sleep! Although then you have to try not to fall asleep on your laptop :) It's almost like reading a book! I find that if I shut the lights off and I'm comfy, I usually will fall asleep quicker than if I'm sitting at the computer or I have some brighter lights on.

If I had a foam mattress, I'd be in it right now :) I love those things! When are they gonna invent foam couches??

Foam pad

I have used a foam pad of some kind for the last 8 years. I used to buy what they called a egg crate that people with bed sores were put on to help them.

The egg crates were good for padding and made the bed far more comfortable. I graduated to a 2" foam pad that is that looks like a giant birthday cake that has been cut into sections that pull apart when moved. It does hold some heat but it has not been a problem for us.

As far as it being wet, my son wet it last month, all I did was take it off the bed,(it is king size) and put the part that had been wet next to a open window after I sprayed it with Odoban. We have no problems, we have had this one for two years now and when it starts sagging then I will buy another.

It makes all the difference with me since I have spinal stenosis and fibromylgia and I usually am in constant pain. The foam really helps.

I have been wanting to buy a tempopedic but have refrained since I have heard and read a lot of reviews where it sags.

Buying a foam pad when I need to is a lot cheaper and my new bed is still good.

My husband is always hot but he hasn't complained about the pad holding in more heat. It is easier to get warm in the winter.

Hope this helps.

Diane

RE: Foam pad

Diane, this was so timely. We took off the pad we're using and washed and dried it two days ago. We both wonder what good it's doing us except for keeping the mattress clean. But it's been uncomfortable, really.

I'm off today to get a foam pad, taking your word and that of the others on here. I'll let you know if it makes a difference at all to us.

Hugs, (and I can't imagine taking my computer to bed with me....lol)

So did you get one? And do you like it? I figure if I can't afford a foam mattress, I may still get the foam pad!
