Phoenix Gold : A Warning

These amps are very poorly made, don't last, and literally fall apart after a while. The RCA jacks will come free the little blue LED that lights the logo will die, they get extremely hot, and color the music in a variety of ways. Their cables have been around forever and most retailers will say they rock, but their amps are far from that.

I was talking to my usual rep at Crutchfield yesterday and he kept bringing up two of the PG models repeatedly, even though i was asking about when some subs would be in stock. To me, that smacks of spiffs (hardsell for reward) and I am disappointed Crutchfield feels the need to go that route when they have so many other brands that are soooo much better.

Bottom line, do not be tempted by price, PG amps are terrible.

jm2c and a heads up.

Wow.

You really dislike PG Car Audio amplifiers? I personally LOVE the PG Xenon amplifier line, but I cannot comment on any of the other lines of amps or any other electronics made by PG, for that matter. :)

RE: Wow.

thats why I don't think i commented on your xenon review. I am referring primarily to the octane series and the one just below it and the three may be radically different. I would say they are the equivalent to Pyramid, which in and of itself is not really an insult the same parent company puts out American Legacy (really cheap caps) and Pyle (actually mfr many popular brands of speakers). My primary gripe was bling at the expense of better QC. the RCA thing is unforgiveable, I would say they were tack soldered, but that would be an insult to tack soldering machines world wide...

Just my experience. At this point I have pretty much given up on Alpine too, they look pretty and have truly premier name recognition, but have you looked at their numbers recently? How sloppy does an amp have to be till someone says "enough!" certainly not CNet, they love everything they review....I wonder if they are owned by Autoweek...

By means of comparison the Infinity amps are just as sloppy but sound quite a bit better. I will say this and leave it alone, if you have the money and desire true fidelity and not just kidney rupturing punch from your mains, Zapco is the only way to go.
