Help in buying a digital camera

I want to buy my 1st digital camera & am not sure what features I should be looking for. Want to spend under $300 and that it should be small enough to carry in my handbag. Some people tell me a viewfinder is very important but a lot I've seen don't have one. HELP.....need suggestions. Can anyone recommend a specific model that would take good pics and be fairly easy to use. Thank you.
