School Closings
There's about an inch of powdery snow on the ground. Area roads are mostly clear of snow. Yet most of the Baltimore area schools, including my county of residence, are closed today. My morning tutoring student at Huntington cancelled today, and most scheduled dog groomings where my daughter works were cancelled. Amazing stuff.
QUESTION: What does it take to close schools in your area?

When I was a kid, it had to be a lot of snow. In between the end of my public education and before my kids started just the threat of snow was enough to close schools.
Things seem to have swung back a little toward what I consider reasonable. Basically, actively snowing in the morning, or so much snow fell during the night (6" +) that they just couldn't get the schools and town sidewalks cleared to justify a late opening.
So far our town has not missed any school yet. We have not had any delayed openings or early closings. Of course this has been an awful winter for snow lovers. While there is some spotty white stuff on the ground right now we have not had more than a 2" in two different "storms" so far.
Other towns have cancelled because of some of the extreme cold we have had the past month. After a weekend in the single digits some towns were not able to get the buses started on a Monday morning to actually get the kids to school. The cold has also caused LOTS of water main breaks which may close just one school, or the whole town depending on district policy.
To close anything other than schools and town activities takes incredible amounts of snow falling at a rate where plow equipment can't keep the highways clear. That usually only happens once or twice in a winter.

RE: School Closings
I'm in the DC area, which has weather similar to Baltimore. Schools around here were closed on Wednesday with perhaps an inch of snow on the ground.
I think at least part of the problem this time around was just how cold it was. School officials are wary of lawsuits, so they thought twice about making kids stand in the cold at school bus stops. I know that lots of the country has it colder than we do, but it is freakin' cold.
Also, although main roads are generally clear, nothing is done in most developments. Some of the roads in my development now have large ice sheets where the sun can't reach the pavement. Just for the heck of it, I spiked my brakes this morning over one of these ice sheets and the car immediately started to spin. So much for antilock brakes!

Here, it takes usually at least 4-5" of snow to close the schools, unless there is black ice underneath. However, they've been closed in MN twice in the past 2 weeks for extreme cold. Windchills have been below 40! |

I can't even fathom what that must feel like and can understand why schools would close under such brutal conditions.

RE: School Closings
Well, it sounds like we might have our first snow day on Wednesday. Not a lot of snow, but ice and it is supposed to snow all day.

They're calling for ice around here too. Hope we don't lose power because of the ice.

10 inches and climbing
We now hit 10 inches of snow. I can't complain because I watched an older man shoveling 3 feet of snow off his roof in New York. School's out, but the music store i work in is open (yeah kids!) |

RE: 10 inches and climbing
I'm a little disgruntled that the law school has not been closed when all other area colleges and grade schools have been. Many students I know have been in accidents (minor, fortunately) trying to get to and from class. Personally, I was stuck in my apartment parking spot today due to drifting and a good samaritan Comcast guy helped me out with the twenty minute process of dislodging my car.
I can't WAIT until the roads get safe again.
