My skin is and has always been relatively normal. By this I mean my skin isn't extremely dry, oily, wrinkled, or sensitive (knock on wood!). I know you want to know this: I get the occasional clogged pore or monthly breakout! However, I still need to follow my face care routine with a light, non-oily moisturizer to keep it smooth and hydrated.
I have used Clean and Clear Oil Free Moisturizer for a few years and LOVE it. So why on earth did I feel the need to try a new moisturizer when I already have a tried-and-true in my Clean and Clear? Who knows, but I am kicking myself for it.
In the drugstore I browsed for a while and came up with a 2.5 oz tube of a new moisturizer made by L'Oreal. Their new Pure Zone Continuous Action Skin Relief Oil-Free Moisturizer (a mouthful, isn't it?!) was supposed to be the third step in the new skin care line, L'Oreal Pure Zone. This skincare line is marketed towards those with younger skin and fewer special skin needs.
The packaging claims:
~Oil-Free
~Salicylic Acid Breakout Treatment
~Dermo-Calm Complex (I'm wondering about this one, too!)
~Relieves dryness
~Won't clog pores
~Shine-Free
~"Get healthier looking skin day after day... Free from breakouts."
-from container.
The directions say to "Apply a thin layer to cleansed skin AM and PM."
Active Ingredient: Salicylic acid 0.6%
The 2.5 oz of moisturizer is packaged in a white squeeze tube with a blue flip-top cap that it stands on. The tube costs about $9.
Alright, so the next morning after washing my face (with Clean and Clear Oil Free Acne Wash, in case you were wondering) I remembered to forgo my usual Clean and Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer and instead squeezed out a little bit of the Pure Zone. The moisturizer is a creamy, medium-thick lotion texture that is white and non-sticky. I rubbed this through my palms and smoothed it over my face. Ok, felt alright.... oh wait! The smell is SO BAD! Pure Zone moisturizer has a VERY STRONG smell which is exactly like heavy, musky, cheap men's cologne! I tried to ignore that and concentrate on the effects of the moisturizer.
I let the Pure Zone sink in while I did my hair. With each minute that passed, my face felt stiffer and stiffer. It felt like I had a clay face mask drying on my skin! After some 15 or so minutes I went to do my makeup and was horrified to see that my face was caked in cracking, chalky whiteness! The moisturizer had formed a thin, dried-on mask on my face! I thought that maybe this was supposed to happen or something, and tried to apply my foundation. Ok, NOT HAPPENING!
When I tried to put on my makeup, the chalky mask started to peel and flake off, making my makeup gritty and disgusting. I gave up and washed it all off! When all of the nasty chalky stuff was gone, I looked in the mirror and gasped, as my usually smooth, pale complexion was red, irritated, and starting to react! I rarely react so strongly to any product!
Needless to say, I tossed this product out and do not recommend it to anyone. It's a horrible product that will not satisfy the claims it makes. I had a thoroughly negative experience with this product and doubt that anyone could really enjoy using it, as it is extremely drying, chalky, cakey, caused a reaction for me, has a terrible scent, etc.
If you are looking for a terrific, light, oil-free moisturizer, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out Clean and Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer. Here's my review of this wonderful product:
