This year before the holiday season even approached, I decided way back in September not to let my hard work over the summer slide into oblivion, and vanish under bulky sweaters, as I inevitably gorged on the season's finest treats. Solution? This year I fought back with both a new treadmill and a simply wonderful elliptical trainer by NordicTrack. If you need to slim down, maintain, or are just trying for a great cardio workout, this may be the machine for you!
What's An Elliptical Trainer?
While I am no workout guru, it seems to me that an elliptical trainer is one of the newer innovations in the health clubs. The best way I can describe it, is that it's a cross between a stair-climber, and a bike. The user stands on wide foot pedals and pushes either forward or back, simulating a circular, biking motion. The difference is that you're standing, and oh boy, will you feel the burn!!
Why NordicTrack?
You may have heard of NordicTrack before, most notably they make the ski machines and are located in many malls. We tried out several makers versions of elliptical trainers, and really just kept coming back to the NordicTrack. Sure, there were cheaper models, but this one just feels stable. You don't want to be really working out and feel like you're about to tip right over. You also don't want notify the neighborhood that you're in the middle of a workout, because the thing's so noisy they can all hear it!
Features For Fitness-
While this is not the top of the line model elliptical trainer, it's certainly got enough features to keep novices like us content. The VGR910 come equipped with the following:
~LCD Display
~Dual Beverage Holders
~Book Holder
~Manual Powered=No Cords
~6 Programming Options
~Can connect via internet or video for more options.
Bumps On The Road To Fitness-
If space is at a premium this may not be the machine for you. Equally as wide as our motorized treadmill, it's even longer by about a foot. It is also heavy!! Weighing in at 170 pounds, it took two very strong men to maneuver it upstairs to our bedroom, and it's not easy for me to move around for cleaning, despite wheels on the back.
So far as I've found, there's no other drawbacks to the elliptical trainer. I love that there are no cords, the kids can't turn it on by themselves, and if there's any features missing, I've never felt deprived.
Work It, Work It!
So probably the most important question of all is How well does it work? I'm sure the answer varies by the diligence and condition of the individual user, but for me, it works great. I feel the burn in my quads and butt with every work out, and I am starting to really notice an improvement in the muscle tone in my legs after working out for about 2 months.
Easy Riding-
When working out on the NordicTrack VGR910 I think you'll be impressed with the overall feel of the machine. Your feet will have ample room on the pads, even my husband with his size 13's can hop on with room. You can place your hands either on a free-standing bar, or pedal while using the arms at the same time. Either way, your workout is smooth!! The pedals ride up and down in grooves, and use magnetic technology for added resistance. It's so easy you won't need an instruction manual unless you plan to use the monitor. I usually don't even bother, it's more distracting than helpful to me.
Safety First-
Do be sure to check with a physician if you haven't exercised recently so you don't hurt yourself, and be sure to exercise with moderation until you are conditioned, to avoid injury.
I also wanted to mention that while there are no cords for kids to pull on, I'd be very careful still with kids, as mine love to hop on this machine at every opportunity. I don't think they could tip it, but I do worry that they'll slip while trying to pedal and hit their heads. The support posts are steel, and could be dangerous!
All In All-
For a whale of a good workout, and some concentrated leg attention, check out the NordicTrack VGR910. If you give it some time, it'll give you some fabulous results.
Pricing-
The regular price is listed as $799.99, but we got this for $599.99 on sale, and it's currently offered at that price. Do be sure to try and shop around before paying too much.
