| astrogirl's Full Review: Linda Goodman - Linda Goodman's Sun Signs |
Sun Signs was first published in 1968 - the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, according to the musical Hair. Sun Signs was Linda Goodman's first book, apart from a slim volume of astrological poems. It was the first astrology book to make number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and brought astrology into the public domain. It became a hot topic amongst housewives and hairdressers, stock brokers and school teachers, bartenders and businessmen. No matter what their personal beliefs about astrology might be, almost everyone now knows their sun sign and its general characteristics.
Each sign is covered in depth; not telling the reader what it is like to be a certain sign, but what it is like to relate to that sign, whether as friend, lover, spouse, parent, boss or employee. Linda has an engaging style - vivacious, witty and intimate, sprinkled with references from the literature of Ancient Rome to Mother Goose. Behind the apparently effortless, almost gushing prose, lie some shrewd observations of human psychology. For those who choose to look deeper still, Linda has included many hints of esoteric wisdom that will escape the casual reader.
Like all classics, Sun Signs is a book to grow along with. As well as being a great book for the person taking their first steps in astrology, it has been a standard text for distinguished astrologers such as Charles Harvey, past President of the British Astrological Association, and Julia Parker, astrological counsellor and lecturer. In Sun Signs, Linda makes it clear that there is much more to astrology than the sun sign alone; the book is designed to awaken the desire to discover more about the natal chart; the Moon, the Ascendant, and the placement of the planets.
This is what it did for me, and for millions of other readers. I first picked up a copy of Sun Signs in my high school library, and began the long journey towards qualifying as a professional astrologer. Seventeen years later, I still find fresh insights between its pages. Linda went on to write other books more mature, more daring and from a higher spiritual perspective. She turned the personal tragedies of her life into opportunities to inspire others, and left behind as her legacy a devoted following whose love keep her memory alive.
Sun Signs is a book everyone can enjoy, whether novice, professional, sceptic looking for laughs or serious searcher after inner truths. It is a wonderful introduction both to the world of astrology and the world of Linda Goodman.
Linda wrote at the end of this book: "You are endless galaxies, and you have seen but one star". I hope one day Linda's other "stars" may glitter at Epinions.
