| Mom2TyZick's Full Review: Baby Talk Magazine |
Here's another good thing about being pregnant...you get free magazine subscriptions! Baby Talk is published by the same folks who put out Parenting. The difference is in the size and the scope of the magazines. Baby Talk focuses specifically on pregnancy and infants while Parenting takes a more generalized view of parenthood, with some articles geared for teenagers.
Baby Talk is published 10 times a year and is free to expectant parents and parents of children under 18 months old. My offer for free subscription came in my packet for new parents on my first prenatal appointment.
When I first became pregnant, I thought I wouldn't need any refreshers since I'd gone through this before. My son is now six, and I've found out just how much you will forget in six years! There is always a new ground breaking product to be reviewed, or a new parenting technique to try and it is also comforting to see some things never change!
The cover looks like any other parenting magazine. Baby Talk is in bold bright letters across the top, and an adorable baby is always featured on the cover. Also given is a sampling of the articles you will find inside. On the inside is a quick reference for the cover articles mentioned, so if one caught your fancy it would be simple to find quickly.
The advertisements are a huge part of this magazine, and while I find that a bit annoying, it is understandable since this seems to be Baby Talk's only means of funding. Also, it is a nice way to find out about some new products that they didn't have the first time around.
The table of contents are broken down nicely, but with one look you realize quickly that this magazine doesn't hold as much information as Parenting or Parents. First you have the Features section which are the articles inside. Next is the In Every Issue section which gives you a list of the recurring topics in each magazine. Last is the On the Cover section I spoke of earlier, but all of these articles are listed in the two previous sections, so upon first glance it just looks like you are getting more information.
Features
This section features new and interesting articles designed to address issues pregnant women or brand new moms face daily. In the November 2002 issue, some of the issues include Why Babies Love Babies which helps parent understand what babies like so that they can make better baby buddies. Also included is Celebrate which gives pregnant women some holiday options in maternity wear. Toys of the Year is a very helpful article to determine what Santa Claus is bringing this year. The Teen Moms' Club focuses on the specific trials of being a young mom and where to find support. Lastly is a Baby Talk Cover Contest which could help your child become a cover model.
In Every Issue
Included here is the Editor's Note which is simply a letter to the editor. It is nice, but not necessary. Deliveries is where other readers share letters and pictures. SmallTalk is just a page dedicated to a potpourri of fun stuff. In this month's article we see a reader who has sent in a picture of her baby who she thinks favors Kevin Bacon (I don't see it) and some cute little Asian-inspired baby clothes (I love!) and a cool coffee table book called From Conception to Birth which is deemed as a unique baby gift.
Also included in this section is Healthy Baby which deals with health issues for infants such as infant eye exams, asthma and vaccinations. Baby Steps deals with a different stage each month that your baby goes through such as taming temper tantrums. Wit and Wisdom is a question and answer section that tells new parents how to deal with potentially sticky situations.Your Body discusses different happenings to the pregnant woman's body. BT Bargains gives new moms and dads a heads up on sales and good deals. The BT List is at the very back of the magazine and gives a cute list, this month is a listing of a new mom's favorite things.
All in all, I can recommend this magazine to you as a supplemental guide to pregnancy and new babies. You can't use it as a reference guide, but it does contain plenty of useful information. Not least of all, the price cannot be beat!
Cost per magazine if purchased: $2.95
