Here I only want to comment on the amazon.com marketplace since I never conducted any transactions on the other parts.
When I wanted to buy a used textbook from amazon.com, because all the new ones are too expensive, range $90-120 either on amazon itself or other online or regular bookstores. Finally I found one there, and the price is acceptable for a student - $64.99, the seller is from IL, he commented as his book as "brand new, hardly used..." then I placed the order, paid by my credit card, then wait.....
OK, then several days later, the book arrived, I was satisfied with the seller and the amazon when I saw the package in my mailbox. Then I held it in my hand and went upstairs to my apartment, I felt a little wired: the book I ordered should be a hardcover one, why this.....?
Then I opened up the package, then I was outraged!!! What I wanted was the 3rd version published in May 2002, that was the 2nd version showed up in 1995, from half.com, the value of this book is less than $30.
Then I went to amazon website to see what they are talking about return and refund. Ok, here is the deal, "When you buy an item from a seller at Amazon Marketplace, you can expect that seller to maintain the same high standard of customer service you would expect from Amazon.com." How could I know if the seller is not a liar?
Then "If you receive an item different than what was described, or that is clearly in worse condition than indicated, please contact your seller directly via e-mail. You should be able to reach an amicable agreement with one another." what if I can't, I emailed that guy and he insisted that he did mentioned in his comment that the book was 2nd edition and softcover.
OK, I checked with my order history, the link DOES leads to the page of the 3rd version, and when I input the ISBN of the old book, the search engine said it could not find the item, and there are several other old books for sale that are listed under the new book category. That is the so called "world largest online store"?
The most ridiculous thing is, I checked the guy's another book with the same title last night, the comments WERE indeed changed to what he said in his email ( I don't know when he did). Guess what, this morning the same book moved under a new ID and email address. Oops! forgot to mention, the guy's account has been left a negative feedback (not mine yet). Obviously he wants to change to another ID and continue to cheat, that is outrageous!!!! Amazon even does not have a way to prevent this and allow those bad guys do what they want, maybe they can get more commission if they don't make strict policy.
I will ship the damn book back to its owner and get money back anyway, yet still have no idea if I can get it or not. But sure I will never buy any books from the marketplace, because there is no guarantee if you can get the right stuff you ordered and the following return and refund might be pain in the butt as well, who knows!!!
