unhappycarrie's Full Review: Sue William Silverman - Love Sick: A Woman's Journ...
Yes, I actually bought this book. Why? I have to admit that the title grabbed me first. Then as I thumbed through the book, I noticed the book was divided up into days, much like a diary.
Love Sick begins; "Every Thursday at noon I have sex with Rick in room #213 of the Rainbow motel. Today, even though I promised my therapist I wouldn't come here again, I pull into the lot and park beside Rick's black Ford Bronco."
I have to admit I was intrigued. This woman has a sexual addiction? Is that possible? What is a sexual addiction? Could I or someone I know have a sexual addiction? I intended to find out.
Love Sick begins on Sue's last day out as the addict. She sleeps with Rick at noon and then lays around the motel room for awhile. When she gets home, she has to change out of her trashy clothes into something her husband will tolerate. Dinner is late and burned. This is a pretty normal day for Sue.
If Sue is unhappy, she will go find a complete stranger to sleep with. She feels that this is the only way she can feel loved. She also has an eating disorder that seems to go along with her sexual addiction. If she is happy, she eats. If she is unhappy, she doesn't. Sue doesn't eat very much, and is very thin as a result.
Her therapist, Ted, feels it is time for her to go into treatment. Luckily, Sue realizes that she has a problem and wants help.
As you go through the days with Sue, you find out some reasons why she might have these addictions. A person could become a sexual addict just as easily as they could become addicted to drugs or alcohol. You may also be able to tell if you or someone you know has a sexual addiction by answering some of the questions right along with Sue, out of her workbook. Luckily, I discovered that I do not have this problem!
Why I liked this book
This is a very honest book written by Sue, herself. The author brings you right into her life and shares her feelings and thoughts with you. She is a wonderful story teller. She makes it easy for you to try to understand and tolerate her addiction and behavior. While reading this book, I noticed that when she was frustrated I felt frustrated. When she was starting to get better, I found myself rooting for her all the way. Also, you could see where a story like this could be quite graphic. That wasn't the way it was. Sue used a more sensitive language throughout the book which I liked.
Another thing I liked, was the format. I usually read a little before I go to bed at night. The book is broken up into days which makes it a very easy book to read.
The last, but not least, reason I liked this book was the characters:
Sue is a person that you can relate to even if you are not an addict.
Her therapist, Ted, seemed like a very helpful and caring individual. Sue was able to call him up at home if she was having problems, and he would always respond in a positive way. I know that is what he gets paid for, but it seemed like more of a life for him than just a job.
Her roommate, Jill, was one of those self-destructive individuals that didn't really want help. She often brought Sue down and tempted her into relapsing.
Why I didn't like this book
I wanted more information. I thought that the story really began years ago, so the book should've started earlier. I would be interested in reading how her addiction began and when she first realized that it was a problem.
Why I wanted to shake this woman
It is hard for me to understand why someone would want to do this to themselves. Throughout the book, this woman is having thoughts of sleeping with everyone from the maintenance guy to the unattractive man in her group therapy session. It seemed like as soon as you would start to believe that she was getting better, some guy would come into the picture and she'd be right back where she started.
Why I want to commend this woman
Any addiction is very hard to overcome. I should know. I have been a smoker for 7 years. I would like to congratulate this woman on making it through treatment and getting healthy again. It took a lot of courage for her to write this amazing account of her life as an addict.
