I have been a big fan of amazon since it opened, and until about 6 months ago all my experiences have been positive. They have a great shopping interface engine, great selection, and in general make it very easy to order from them. Pricing is on a par with elsewhere (or slightly higher), but that has not deterred me from making them my number one online store.
My recent experiences for the last 6 months have caused me to rethink my opinion, however. While customer service and inventory availability has improved on the other online stores I shop from, Amazon's has deteriorated. The inventory availability cannot be trusted - generally everything I select has a "usually ships within 24 hours" tag. However, recently nothing has shipped in less that 72 hours, and sometimes I have waited a great deal longer than that before canceling the order. When I press for an explanation, it is always "we are waiting to receive this or that". This has been true in books, electronics, and toys so it seems like a policy shift has occurred across Amazon. Or maybe I am just incredibly unlucky. Obviously , the right thing to do is inform the customer up front of a stock shortage or shipping delay.
My other gripe is customer service; correspondence is terse bordering on rudeness. And don't expect any immediate help no matter how important your stuff is to you.
To summarize, if you have a lot of patience and don't care how long it takes to get your stuff, I would recommend Amazon wholeheartedly. I don't have the patience of Job, so I am planning to start shifting most of my time critical business elsewhere.
