Closing in on 40

Jun 24 '08

The Bottom Line The older I get, the better I was.

Having just come back from my 20th High School Reunion makes me realize more than ever before that 40 is creeping up on me. While indulging in some reflection with my classmates as we took our trips down Memory Lane, I realized that there are some things about my teens, 20's and early 30's I'd do again, and some I wouldn't.

Teens
Oh, that magical time when total freedom feels completely elusive and your hormones are raging. It was also the last time in my life I'd lounged by the pool without guilt all summer long.

Highlights:
* I was skinny naturally.
* Flirting was fun and guilt-free.
* Puppy love
* Experimented with hair color and hair cuts.

Lowlights:
* Wouldn't leave the house without being dressed to kill.
* That first heartbreak was a doozie.

20's
The twenties for some are a carefree time filled with parties, finding one's self and freedom. This was not my experience. My twenties gave me my first taste of responsibility, heartache and true love.

Highlights
* Graduated from college
* Got married
* Started a family

Lowlights
* My first gray hair
* Marriage is not as easy as I'd thought.

30's
The feeling that you have accomplished so much and are proud of those accomplishments. My 30's have been marked with a feeling of self-esteem unlike any I've felt in my life. Life is good!

Highlights:
* Can and will leave the house without makeup.
* Feel comfortable in my own skin.
* Refocused on my career now that my children are in school.
* Finally got anti-anxiety drugs.
* Financial freedom!
* Getting to know my children as people.
* Getting my marriage in a place it needed to be.
* Realizing how strong and grounded I am.

Lowlights
* So much harder to lose weight.
* The tanning gave me wrinkles.
* Marriage is not as easy as it looks.
* Losing grandparents.
* Health problems with and after second child.
* I'm so hot I could die.

I guess there are many stages in life, and I'm looking forward to living to see the next one!
