Dealing with mean people

Jun 15 '08

The Bottom Line Loud people are like barking dogs. They want to scare you away. Their fear is like rain on the horizon.

At times we are forced to deal with mean people and end up being very upset by the experience. Mostly there is little you can do but take the abuse and go on.

We generally don't like to be bested and I've been practicing a mental exercise which silently affirms personal strength and places your opponent in a realistic perspective.

I call it "Worst case". It involves asking yourself the question, "How far would this person be willing to go?".

The only requirement to this exercise is to have already answered a valid "Worst case" question about yourself.

Ideally you will have several questions. There is no special theme required as long as your answers are truthful.

How it works is you define your limitations and assess those of the blowhard.
Because you most likely will know your opponent, this is easier than it would seem.

I believe that few people are willing to acknowledge that for all their bluster they are mostly hot air. Ask yourself how far would this person would be willing to go, and answer it with how far you would be willing to go.

Once you begin to take the monster down a few notches it is easier to see what you are dealing with.

Someone who may have learned they can get their way by showing anger.

Someone who may not have endured the hardships which shaped your character and strengthened you.

Someone who if alone with you would not behave so bravely with no way out.
